Grand Theft Auto Online Heists Trailer

Heists were a big part of Grand Theft Auto V, and were expected to be a big part of the game’s companion multiplayer option, Grand Theft Auto Online, as well. But the online heists never came, and fans have been desperately awaiting their arrival for well over a year now.

Now, finally, it appears that Rockstar Games is ready to unleash these heists upon the masses. An official Heists Trailer has been released, and a release window is known. Click on over to the other side to check it out.

Here’s the description from Rockstar, including when you can expect to play:

GTA Online Heists are coming early in 2015 – check out the new trailer for the four-player co-op mode for Grand Theft Auto Online that allows players to plan, prepare and execute multi-tiered Heists across Los Santos and Blaine County. These will require tight communication and coordination, with players taking on specified roles at each point to accomplish multiple objectives on the way to each Heist’s epic finale. Featuring new gameplay, new vehicles, new weapons, new clothing and much more.

If interested in the dirty details on how heists will work, and why it has taken so long to make them happen, you can head over to IGN for an interview with Rockstar well worth reading.

For me and many others this long delay has been easy to accept, and it’s a damn shame that some fans of the series have directed anger and frustration toward Rockstar because of it. The fact of the matter is that they’ve done everything right with GTA V. They released a phenomenal game in one of the greatest open video game worlds ever created. They’ve released a ton of extra content since the initial release, and gave it all away for free. They could have simply polished up the game, as it was, and released it for new-gen consoles and PC with few complaints, but instead they added a ton of new content and made the entire game playable in first-person mode…no easy task.

On top of all of that, they could have probably sold Grand Theft Auto Online as an entirely separate product, in which case some of these complaints would have been warranted. But they didn’t do that. It too was given away for free with your purchase of GTA V. And all of these long-awaited heist missions? Yep, those will be free as well. That’s going above and beyond, folks.

We live in a time where games are constantly released unfinished, and fans excitedly buy them only to have to wait until the bugs are ironed out via patches. I’m sure Rockstar could have probably released heists earlier, but they wouldn’t have been fully functional, leaving people to complain about that instead. And that’s the rub isn’t it? Is it better to release something fans want sooner and let them deal with some bugginess while patches are worked on, or is it better to wait as long as necessary to make sure something works?

If all goes well, the wait for online heist missions will have been worth it because they will actually be everything we’ve all hoped they would be, instead of a glitchy nightmare.
