The GoD List Banner

Each and every week, I, “Here we come a wassailing!” Henchman 21 and “What’s a Wassail?” Empress Eve read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible”¦ theoretically. Naturally, we look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of our pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of December 24, 2014. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, all that jazz. I’ve still got wrapping to do so let’s deck the halls with boughs of The GoD List!

Henchman 21

The Massive #30 cover by JP Leon

The Massive #30 (Dark Horse Comics – $3.50) I’ve actually fallen off this series a little bit, but that’s okay, because this is the final issue of Brian Wood‘s The Massive, so at least I can’t fall behind any further. The Massive is another solid entry in Wood’s catalog, with a story that harkens back to his DMZ series, but instead of a bombed out NYC, here we examine the lives of a bunch of eco-activists/terrorists in a kind of post-apocalypse. It’s really the characters that Wood excels at, bringing fully formed characters into a fascinating situation and showing readers how those characters react. This is always what Wood has excelled at, and if you skipped out on The Massive, check it out once it’s all collected.

Gotham by Midnight #2 (DC Comics – $2.99) Did you check out the first issue of Gotham by Midnight? I did, and it was everything that I was hoping for. Writer Ray Fawkes quickly established the cast of the series and gave everyone a unique voice in short order. And then there’s the moody and unique art by Ben Templesmith that perfectly sets the moody for what seems will be an odd and creepy series looking at the more mystical elements of Gotham City that batman can’t protect. It is high praise, but this series already feels a lot like Gotham Central, and I hope it continues on that path.

Corto Maltese: Under the Sign of Capricorn (IDW Publishing – $29.99) If you need a last minute Christmas gift for your dad, and if your dad is anything like mine and likes a good historical drama, consider Corto Maltese: Under the Sign of Capricorn. This is the first entry in IDW’s translation of Hugo Pratt’s world-renowned adventure of the titular mercenary working in the South Seas during World War I. Pratt’s cartooning is a marvel to new audiences that haven’t seen it before, recalling Joe Kubert and Al Williamson, among other classic artists. The time period that Corto Maltese is set in may be unfamiliar to a lot of readers, but Pratt instantly drops readers in to the setting with deep characters and lots of little details that bring the world to life. If you know someone who likes Indiana Jones, or old war movies, or just history in general, this will make a great last minute gift or maybe just buy it for yourself.

Empress Eve

Krampus trade paperback Image Comics

Krampus TPB (Image Comics – $12.99) All naughty children beware, for the Krampus is coming! You know nothing says “holiday cheer” like the Krampus, which is why this trade paperback edition collecting issues 1-5 of Krampus by Brian Joines and Dean Kotz, is a perfect Christmas read. This 136-page trade also contains some bonus material not found in the single issues. In this story, the newly-freed Krampus criss-crosses the globe to shake up Christmas and recover the stolen power of the Secret Society of Santa Clauses. (The TPB is available now through TFAW and will be released on Amazon on 12/28/2014.)
