He was the final addition to Universal’s “royal family” of movie monsters: The Creature from the Black Lagoon. With his scaly armor, razor claws and a face only a mother octopus could love, this Amazon denizen was perhaps the most fearsome beast in the history of Hollywood’s Studio of Horrors. But he also possessed a sympathetic, poignant quality which elevated him fathoms above the many aquatic monsters who swam in his wake.

The culmination of 30 years of research, Tom Weaver‘s book, The Creature Chronicles: Exploring the Black Lagoon Trilogy, is a 408-page tome that documents the history and influence of Jack Arnold’s 1954 film.

Everything you ever wanted to know about the Gill Man and his film career (Creature from the Black Lagoon, Revenge of the Creature, The Creature Walks Among Us) is chronicled with hour-by-hour production histories, cast biographies, critical essays and analyses, explorations of the music, script-to-screen comparisons, in-depth interviews, and 300 behind-the-scenes photographs.

Timed to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the original film’s release, Creature Chronicles is a fantastic tribute to the Gill Man and everyone behind-the-scenes who made the film – and its signature creature – iconic.

Weaver has been interviewing genre filmmakers since the early ’80s and is considered one of the leading scholars in the horror field. In addition to in-depth details about the making of the films, Weaver’s book is filled with anecdotes and classic Hollywood stories culled from extensive interviews with people in the industry.

For fans of classic horror and monster movies, The Creature Chronicles: Exploring the Black Lagoon Trilogy is an awesome book – it’s so packed with information about filmmaking and film production that it could be used as a textbook, but it’s equally enjoyable as a coffee table book, with stunning photography of my favorite movie monster of all time.

Published by McFarland, The Creature Chronicles: Exploring the Black Lagoon Trilogy is available as a gorgeous hardcover book at Amazon. It makes the perfect companion to Michael Mallory’s 2009 book, Universal Studios Monsters: A Legacy of Horror, and Universal’s glorious Blu-ray box set, Universal Classic Monsters: The Essential Collection.

  1. One of my favorite horror movies, though in the mid 1950’s going to see it was scary…was the Creature in my house? The man that played the creature in the water was Ricou Browning, and later he directed the underwater battle in the James Bond film “Thunderball.”

  2. Maybe we could get the studio to re-release it for its anniversary…?

  3. I have a “Scarlet Street” magazine from 2002 that is devoted to the Creature.
