George Lucas Planned More ‘Star Wars’ Before Selling To Disney
  |  @   |

Say what you want about what George Lucas has done to the Star Wars franchise, but from the moment Disney acquired Lucasfilm from him, they’ve made all sorts of announcements that would make any fan of the franchise smile. While we wait eleven more months to see the fruits of that acquisition with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Lucas is talking about some of the other Star Wars-related projects he’s working on under his previously-owned Lucasfilm.

While doing promotions for his animated film Strange Magic, Lucas is admitting that he was starting to work on a new Star Wars trilogy before he sold his company to Disney. But there were from prior commitments that prevented him from actually doing it. It the jump for more details.

In an interview with USA Today, the 70-year-old filmmaker confirmed that he had intended to create a new Star Wars trilogy, and then sell the company. However, he got married and they had a child, so the commitment of having a family while writing a new trilogy would have been too much for the Indiana Jones producer, who had originally intended on releasing his Episode VII in May 2015.

Disney had contacted Lucas around that time when he was making these decisions. And we all know what happened after that. Here’s what he had to say:

It’s better for me to get out at the beginning of a new thing and I can just remove myself. The time is more important to me than the money.

That time off will also give Lucas an opportunity to do the things he hasn’t been able to do, like enjoy a Star Wars film fresh.

The only thing I really regret about Star Wars is the fact I never got to see it “” I never got to be blown out of my seat when the ship came over the screen. The next one, I’ll be able to enjoy it like anybody else.

That’s quite a comment from a guy who has admitted he hasn’t seen the teaser trailer yet for J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Maybe he wants to go in totally unspoiled come December 18, 2015 when the first of the new trilogy hits theaters.
