Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey got his big break in Richard Linklater’s 1993 coming of age film Dazed and Confused. The 2011 Criterion Collection Blu-ray Edition contained the actor’s early 90’s Dazed and Confused audition reel.
Now, the Criterion Collection has just posted the audition online, so you can check out the 90-second video right here below!
At the audition, the shaggy blond-haired McConaughey, who was an early 20s college student at the time, sported a black MTV Headbanger’s Ball t-shirt and ran his lines with eventual co-star Wiley Wiggins.
The film, which has since become a stoner/rock and roll cult classic, follows several groups of Texas teenagers on their last day of school in May of 1976, and featured other actors in smaller roles like Ben Affleck and Milla Jovovich who went on to bigger things. McConaughey played David Wooderson, a man in his early 20s who liked to get high, drive his car, listen to rock, and score with younger chicks. It was in Dazed and Confused that McConaughey first uttered the words “Alright, Alright, Alright,” which went on to become his famous catchphrase during last year’s awards season, a time in which he received a lot of Best Actor nominations and wins for his role in Dallas Buyers Club.
