The GoD List: Comics For January 14, 2015
  |  @   |

Each and every week, I, “Apprentice!” Henchman 21 and “Master!” Empress Eve read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible”¦ theoretically. Naturally, we look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of our pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of January 14, 2015. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

It’s another new week of comics, and while there are a lot of great comics out this week, there’s really only one book out this week, and it’s from Marvel, and it’s Star Wars. Eve will get to that, but there are plenty of other books out this week, like new issues of Lazarus, Avengers, The Fuse, Copperhead, and Batgirl. We’ve got a couple titles from this week and one from last week that you should check out as well, so don’t just buy one comic this week, buy a bunch. That’s kind of what we’re all about on The GoD List!

Henchman 21

Conan Red Sonja #1 (of 4) (Dark Horse Comics – $3.99) There is so much to enjoy about Conan Red Sonja #1 from Dark Horse Comics, and it’s not just the chance to read the two barbarians take on all comers. You’ve got Gail Simone, who is doing great work on the Red Sonja series from Dynamite Entertainment, and then you’ve got Jim Zum who has cut his teeth on sword and sorcery books like Skullkickers, Pathfinder, and is now working on the Dungeons and Dragons series. Then you’ve got the spectacular art from Dan Panosian, who perfectly captures the action and brutality of the characters. Finally you’ve got a fantastic story featuring Red Sonja and Conan teaming up to fight a sorcerer who wants to create a new dark age. There’s just so much here that you just can’t pass up on Conan Red Sonja #1.

Lady Killer #1 (Dark Horse Comics – $3.50) I have become a huge fan of Joëlle Jones’ art through Helheim, which is why I’m excited to see what she does on her own creator-owned series, Lady Killer. Lady Killer is a darkly humorous about a 1960’s housewife who also happens to be killer for hire. I like the premise that Jones and co-writer Jaime S. Rich have come up with and it’s not something I’ve seen done too often in comics before, at least not in this manner. I’m really most interested in seeing Jones’ art along with the colors of Laura Allred and also seeing what Jones does as a writer. On top of that, this just sounds like a fun series and something I don’t read every week, so don’t skip past Lady Killer #1.

Stray Bullets, Volume 6: Killers (Image Comics – $19.99) If you want a solid crime book this week, you need to pick up the collection of David Lapham’s Stray Bullets: Killers. In this sixth volume, Lapham weaves the story of Virginia and Eli, two damaged kids who find love in each other, but also have to deal with a lot of dangerous situations and a host of violent characters. One of Lampham’s strengths is his ability to make you care about his characters amidst a brutal world. Yes, these are very dark stories, but there is also a lot of beauty in Stray Bullets. These are mature comics in the best way, but maybe don’t read the whole thing in one sitting. (This title will be released on Amazon on January 27, but is available in comic shops and at TFAW now).

Empress Eve

Star Wars #1 (Marvel Comics – $4.99) As Henchman said, there’s only one book out this week and it’s Star Wars #1, Marvel’s relaunch of the Star Wars universe now that the property is back at the publisher for the first time since the 1980s. But, this time around, the stories being told in the comics are considered canon – that means it’s the word, it’s gospel, whatever happens here sticks forever. (This wasn’t the case with the Expanded Universe comics from Dark Horse.) This 48-page first issue, from writer Jason Aaron and artist John Cassaday, picks up soon after the events of the original 1977 film, Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope and features the classic characters we know and love, like Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, Darth Vader, C-3PO, and R2-D2. The Death Star might be destroyed, but the Galactic Empire still lives on, so in this series we’re supposed to see what happened in those years leading up to the Rebel Alliance hiding out in the Hoth system. Get your print copy through Amazon or TFAW, or of course, your local comic book shop, and be sure to check out the preview for the issue we recently posted.
