How will one enigmatic woman be able to control her own fate when so many others would choose to use her for personal gain? Veil, by Greg Rucka and Toni Fejzula, is a story shrouded in mystery and corruption that simultaneously displays the good and evil nature of humanity.

I was first introduced to Rucka’s powerful storytelling with Queen and Country, but unfortunately, have not read any of his other works — until now. With Veil, Rucka has managed to create the perfect blend of mystery, horror, and hope in a tale that is as much enchanting as it is heartbreaking. What impresses me the most about this book, is the focus that is placed on the morality of humans — what is the true focus of an individual’s heart? The tough questions and the wonderment of both the titular character and the graphic novel itself, in my mind, help solidify Rucka’s place as a top comics creator.

Veil is actually my first experience with Fejzula’s art, and I am hooked. His uniquely bleak illustrations are perfectly matched with Rucka’s engrossing and gritty story. The character of Veil is both tantalizing and innocent in depiction. The grim world presented within the pages of Veil is imbued with dark shades of blue, pink, and grey, allowing for a mesmerizing and harrowing visual experience.

With enough closure to certainly standalone as a single graphic novel, Veil does leave some opportunity for a future series. Whatever the case may be, this is a refreshing and thought-provoking read that has piqued my desire to read more titles with Rucka and Fejzula’s names attached. Take my advice and open the Veil.
