George Lucas Confirms His ‘Star Wars’ Sequel Ideas Were Ditched By Disney
  |  @   |

Now George Lucas‘s reaction to seeing the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer is starting to make a bit more sense. Recently the Star Wars creator confirmed that he was working on a new set of sequels before he sold the rights to Disney. In addition to transferring ownership of Star Wars, Lucas also gave his ideas and plot outlines for future sequels.

Lucas has had a hand in the stories for all of the Star Wars films, but The Force Awakens will be the first film that is not based on Lucas’s ideas. At first Michael Arndt was hired to write a draft, based on those initial ideas, before the sale was made. The script would put greater focus on the new characters that would be introduced in the film, with the characters from the original trilogy acting as secondary characters. However, he was suddenly taken off the project, and director J.J. Abrams took over writing the script with Lawrence Kasdan. Hit the jump for more.

Here are Lucas’s comments, which me made to CinemaBlend in a recent interview:

“The ones that I sold to Disney, they came up to the decision that they didn’t really want to do those. So they made up their own. So it’s not the ones that I originally wrote [for Star Wars: The Force Awakens].”

From what we’ve learned, the original script wanted to introduce new characters, with the old ones — Luke, Han, and Leia — being secondary characters. Based on the trailer alone, The Force Awakens doesn’t stray too far from that idea. But for some reason, Abrams felt it was necessary to focus on the characters from the original trilogy.

I’m sure there are some of us who are happy with Abrams going with an original story instead of using something that Lucas came up with. But one has to wonder, what if Abrams and Arndt didn’t have their disagreements? Would we still be on board knowing that the script was based on Lucas’s ideas?

  1. Abrams wants to play it safe with more of the same, I’m guessing. It’s kind of what he does.

  3. Well that’s good. Long as Luke doesn’t start singing, I think it’s best that Lucas doesn’t direct anything now. He can only destroy so much.
