Kurt Cobain live acoustic

Kurt Cobain: Montage Of Heck, the first and only authorized documentary about the late Nirvana front man, will make its world premiere tonight at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, UT, and director Brett Morgen has revealed a first look at the film’s cell animation, which was painted by hand by Hisko Hulsing.

Check it out here below.

The documentary, which is executive produced by Frances Bean Cobain, the late singer’s daughter with wife Courtney Love, will be a mix of live-action and animation. HBO Documentary Films has already picked up Montage Of Heck and will air it on their cable network some time this Spring.

The Oscar-nominated Morgen (On the Ropes, Crossfire Hurricane), who’s been working on the project since 2007, was given full access by the Cobain family to the Kurt Cobain‘s Nirvana and personal archives, including rare footage and unheard demo material, as well as never-before-seen home movies, recordings, artwork, photography, journals, demos, and songbooks, along with interviews from friends and family.

April 5, 2014 marked the 20-year anniversary of Cobain’s death at 27 years old from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Cobain, who along with his Nirvana bandmates were pioneers of the Seattle grunge movement, left behind wife Courtney Love and their then-2-year-old daughter Frances Bean Cobain. The Aberdeen, WA-born guitarist, who was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 as part of of Nirvana, had been long suffering from pain and drug addiction and had spent time in drug rehab just before this death.

  1. I thought the film itself was wonderful… lots of new unseen content that gives you a clearer veiw of many things…. the animation to the stories as he spoke them was incredible. I was a little disappointed that they had more Nirvana than I would have liked and less of real unseen or unheard pieces. I was hoping to hear something from Frances. I don’t think they were trying to really clear anything from Courtney so much, if anything it made her indirectly guilty of causing the last straw to break. I will try to see it again for sure this week and definatly watching on HBO May 4th. Hoping the book that is coming out will be a more Kurt and less Nirvana. Not what I was expecting from the way they described the film but wonderful none the less.

  2. Self inflicted? No one is bothered by the fact Cobain was telling everyone he was LEAVING his wife and that a certain wannabe rockstar says he was asked by Love to murder Kurt? No?
