‘The Jetsons’ Animated Film Coming From WB; Matt Lieberman To Write

Warners Bros. will be making an animated Jetsons movie and has hired Matt Lieberman to write the script, according to Deadline, who added that the writer got the gig after his work on the animated Scooby-Doo movie for the studio.

The animated feature film will be based on the 1960s Hanna-Barbera series The Jetsons, for which WB now owns the archives (they acquired this in 1996 when they merged with Turner, which had held the rights since 1991). The cartoon TV series, which was the Space Age answer to the prehistoric Flintstones, centered on Orbit City residents, The Jetsons: George Jetson, his wife Jane, daughter Judy, and son Elroy, along with their dog Astro and robot maid Rosie.

Lieberman, who wrote the script for Tim Hill’s planned remake of Short Circuit, also penned Atlas, which WB has reportedly put on a fast track. Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, which Peter Candeland will direct, and Disney’s Evil Genius are also amongst his writing credits.

This isn’t the studio’s first talk of a new Jetsons film. In 2012, WB had plans for a live-action feature directed by Robert Rodriguez with Adam F. Goldberg writing the script and then Evan Susser and Van Robichaux doing re-writes. There was also a time when rapper Kanye West claimed that he had been approached to be a creative director on the project. Deadline reports now that Lieberman “is working from scratch on a fully animated version.”

The Jetsons previously leaped onto the big screen in the 1990 animated feature, Jetsons: The Movie, directed by creators William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, with the original voice cast of George O’Hanlon, Penny Singleton, and Mel Blanc, along with 90s popstar Tiffany voicing Judy. (Both O’Hanlon and Blanc both passed away during the film’s production, while the movie was Singleton’s final work.)

Season 1 of The Jetsons premiered in 1962 and ran 24 episodes, with Season 2 following decades later in 1985 (released on DVD as Season 2, Vol. 1 and Season 2, Vol. 2) and Season 3 soon behind in 1987.
