Soon after we learned earlier this month that screenwriter Gary Whitta had left Gareth Edwards’ Star Wars standalone film, rumors arose that Simon Kinberg would be taking over writing duties.
Now, THR reports that the Oscar-nominated Chris Weitz has been hired to replace Whitta, who had completed a first draft of the script.
Weitz, who at one time wanted to make an Elric movie (along with his brother Paul Weitz), co-wrote Disney’s upcoming live-action Cinderella (with Aleen Brosh McKenna) and received an Oscar nod for Adapted Screenplay for 2002’s About A Boy. Along with his writing credits, he also directed the fantasy adventure The Golden Compass, adapting the script from the Phillip Pullman novel, and most notably directed The Twilight Saga: New Moon, the second film in widely popular vampire franchise.
At this time, there’s still no confirmation as to what this first of two confirmed Star Wars solo films will be about, although rumors abound that it will feature both Han Solo and Boba Fett and center on a group of bounty hunters out to steal the plans for the Death Star. The filmmakers are currently testing actresses for the female lead, and there was also talk of Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul’s supposed interest in officially joining the Star Wars universe in some capacity. Considering a new screenwriter just came on, the final story can end up being greatly different than what we’ve heard so far.
Edwards’ standalone Star Wars film is scheduled for release on December 16, 2016.
