Fox Developing Potential ‘X-Men’ Live-Action TV Show

Another TV show based on hit comic book characters could be on the way, with news that Fox is working on a small screen take on Marvel’s X-Men.

The network has 24 producers Evan Katz and Manny Coto on board, and they’ve set Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne to write the potential live-action series. McKay and Payne previously worked on the screenplay for Star Trek 3 before Simon Pegg and Doug Jung recently took over scriptwriting duties.

There is, however, a bit of a speedbump to overcome if X-Men the TV show is to become a reality.

According to TV Insider, while sister company 20th Century Fox owns the rights to the X-Men film franchise, Fox would require the go-ahead from Marvel to make a live-action TV series. Marvel is of course owned by Disney, who also owns ABC, a rival of Fox’s TV lineup.

Fox entertainment co-chairman (along with Dana Walden) Gary Newman said of this tricky situation:

“It’s in negotiations. We’re cautiously optimistic, we had a good meeting with them. That will not be on a fast track creatively. This is just the deal, now we have to find the creative.”

If the show works its way through all of the early obstacles a potential series has to get through and becomes a real thing (including that one large obstacle), Katz and Coto would act as showrunners and would also be credited as the show’s creators along with McKay and Payne.

A new X-Men TV series would join a current lineup of comic book superhero-related shows including Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter (both on Disney’s ABC), Fox’s Gotham, CW’s Arrow and The Flash, and more, as well as Marvel’s lineup of shows coming to Netflix beginning with Daredevil in just a few months.
