Kaya Scodelario may not be a household name as of yet, but she is building quite a filmography. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that the Skins and The Maze Runner star has just signed on for a role in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the fifth installment of the Disney film franchise. The British actress joins Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, and possibly Orlando Bloom, as well as series newcomers Javier Bardem and Brenton Thwaites.
Based on Deadline’s initial report last week about the actress being in early talks, Scodelario will be the female lead, playing love interest to Thwaites’ character, a British soldier named Henry who joins forces with Jack Sparrow.
It is also unconfirmed at this time whether Orlando Bloom is actually returning to reprise his role as Will Turner.
Scodelario is currently shooting The Scorch Trials, the sequel to The Maze Runner, and will most likely jump right to Pirates 5 as it is scheduled to start shooting in Australia in April.
While the previous film, Pirates Of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, was a box office smash, the film was met with mixed reactions, and production for this film stalled for quite some time.
Here is Bruckheimer’s post to Twitter confirming Scodelario’s casting:
Pleased to announce that we cast Kaya Scodelario for the 5th Pirates of the Caribbean. Talented young actor from Skins & The Maze Runner.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is being directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg (Kon-Tiki) and is scheduled for a July 7, 2017 release.
