Marvel Avengers: Age Of Ultron Scarlet Witch Elizabeth Olsen, Joss Whedon, Hawkeye behind the scenes

Joss Whedon has been a creative consultant on the MCU since 2012, but The Avengers director’s contract with Marvel Studios ends this year. While it may seem like his upcoming Avengers: Age Of Ultron will be a surefire hit, it doesn’t necessarily mean the filmmaker is ready to take on the film’s two-part sequel, Avengers: Infinity War.

In an interview with Empire, Whedon talked about “possibly” not doing the Avengers: Infinity War movies. Hit the jump to read his full quotes.

Here are Whedon’s comments on his future with Marvel Studios:

I couldn’t imagine doing this again. It’s enormously hard, and it [will] be, by [the time I would make ‘Avengers 3 & 4’], a good five years since I created anything that was completely my own. So it’s very doubtful that I would take on the two-part Infinity War movie that would eat up the next four years of my life. I obviously still want to be a part of the Marvel Universe – I love these guys – but it ain’t easy. This year has been more like running three shows than any year of my life. It is bonkers.

Not completely unexpected. Whedon has said that Ultron was one of the most grueling films he has ever worked on, and to do it all over again for a two-part finale is something he doesn’t seem to be interested in. But, it seems like nothing is set in stone yet. Rumors have been circulating that the directing team of Joe and Anthony Russo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War) is one of the frontrunners to take Whedon’s place at the helm Avengers: Infinity War. No other names have appeared as possibilities, and given the duo’s enormous success on The Winter Soldier, not to mention being asked to come back for Civil War, the possible in-house hire makes plenty of sense.

Avengers: Age Of Ultron opens May 1, 2015, while Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 is scheduled for release on May 4, 2018, with Avengers: Infinity War Part 2 slated for May 3, 2019.
