Minions Universal Studios first look

There is no questioning that Sandra Bullock plays the maternal character very well. In fact, she won an Academy Award for playing a caring mother in The Blind Side, and was nominated for playing a grieving one in Gravity. But she will change it up a bit by playing a villain in the upcoming Despicable Me spinoff/prequel Minions. The film takes place long before those yellow creatures worked for Gru. Throughout many generations, the Minions have been led by the most dangerous of people, from the Tyrannosaurs Rex to Genghis Khan to Napoleon, they crave villainy but they always need a leader – as hinted in the trailer.

So after a long absence in doing nefarious things, three brave Minions will venture out to find that one evil leader. Bullock will voice the villainess Scarlett Overkill, while Jon Hamm will voice her husband Herb Overkill. Hit the jump to see the new images from Minions.

USA Today were the first to debut the new images. Here’s how Minions producer and head of Illumination Chris Meledandri described the new character:

Scarlet Overkill has fantastic hair, wears great clothes and has a lethal uppercut. When we turn her loose on the world, she is going to come out standing on top. “¦ Scarlet has all the gadgetry and accouterments of villainy.

This would be one of the few times that Bullock has played such a character, and based on the description, it sounds like we will be in for something very funny.

This is a side to Sandra Bullock we haven’t seen before. She is really enjoying playing with this villainy. But underneath there’s a character you cannot help but fall in love with.

Here’s how the Minions meeting Scarlet Overkill is being described:

The Minion trio adopt Overkill’s high-flying lifestyle, admiring everything from her stolen jewelry to her castle outside of London and rides in private jets. The new connection also brings the Minions to the cutting edge of the era’s weaponry, from lava guns to hypnotizing helmets.

Check out the Minions Super Bowl Spot that debuted over the weekend.

Minions opens in theaters on July 10, 2015.

The story of Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s Minions begins at the dawn of time. Starting as single-celled yellow organisms, Minions evolve through the ages, perpetually serving the most despicable of masters. Continuously unsuccessful at keeping these masters””from T. rex to Napoleon””the Minions find themselves without someone to serve and fall into a deep depression.

But one Minion named Kevin has a plan, and he””alongside teenage rebel Stuart and lovable little Bob””ventures out into the world to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow.

The trio embarks upon a thrilling journey that ultimately leads them to their next potential master, Scarlet Overkill (Academy Award® winner Sandra Bullock), the world’s first-ever female super-villain. They travel from frigid Antarctica to 1960s New York City, ending in mod London, where they must face their biggest challenge to date: saving all of Minionkind…from annihilation.

Featuring a soundtrack of hit music from the ’60s that still permeates our culture today, Minions is produced by Illumination’s Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy, and is directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda. Brian Lynch has written the screenplay for the 3D-CG comedy adventure, and Chris Renaud serves as executive producer of the film. www.minionnation.net
