BAADASSSSS!   |

Whiplash

Happy first week of February! BAADASSSSS! is here to aid in your Super Bowl weekend decompression process with the latest installment of The Digital Wire that is positively exploding with new announcements. How about that? Two weeks in a row. I’m guessing that January slump is pretty much over now that it’s no longer January. The coldest month of the year is upon us, but hopefully these impending releases will help keep your soul warm even as the temperature plummets. Among the Blu-ray and DVD release news are a pair of critical favorites, another pair of cult sci-fi outings, and more.

Below you’ll find info on several future home video releases complete with technical specs, release dates, and links to pre-order at Amazon. We would greatly appreciate it if you use those links to order because a small percentage of each order helps keep this website running at max power. The cover art for certain titles has yet to be finalized.

Invaders from Mars

Though a box office flop at the time of its release, Tobe Hooper‘s 1986 Cannon Films remake of the sci-fi classic Invaders from Mars has grown a cult following through video rentals and cable airings. Shout! Factory’s horror/sci-fi shingle Scream Factory is giving the film its first U.S. Blu-ray edition which will be available on April 7, 2015 and house some all-new bonus features:

New Audio commentary with director Tobe Hooper

An underrated masterpiece of 1970’s science-fiction, Silent Running – the visionary feature directorial debut of visual effects legend Douglas Trumbull starring Oscar-nominee Bruce Dern in one of his most powerful performances – will be making its U.S. Blu-ray debut from Universal Studios Home Entertainment on April 7, 2015. The extra features will be carried over from the 2002 Region 1 DVD release:

The Making of Silent Running
Silent Running by Douglas Trumbull
A Conversation with Bruce Dern
Douglas Trumbull: Then and Now
Theatrical Trailer
Optional Feature Commentary with Director Douglas Trumbull and Star Bruce Dern

Long Weekend

Synapse Films first released the little-seen Australian horror gem Long Weekend on DVD almost a decade earlier. A haunting tale of a married couple on the brink of divorce whose relaxing camping excursion becomes a slow trip into a hell of vicious wildlife, Colin Eggleston‘s acclaimed feature is coming to Blu-ray from Synapse on April 14, 2015 with a new high-definition transfer and these extras:

Audio Commentary from Producer Richard Brennan and Cinematographer Vincent Monton
Motion Still Gallery Featuring an Audio Interview with Actor John Hargreaves
Theatrical Trailer

Foxcatcher

The Oscars have yet to air but Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has already set a release date for Bennett Miller‘s true life drama Foxcatcher, which is up for five awards. Starring Steve Carrell, Channing Tatum, and Mark Ruffalo, the film comes to Blu-ray and DVD on March 3, 2015. The scant extras will include deleted scenes and the new featurette “The Story of Foxcatcher”.

The Man with the Iron Fists 2

I wanted to love RZA‘s directorial debut The Man with the Iron Fists a whole lot more than I actually did, but the rapper’s 2012 feature-length tribute to martial arts action classics past was defeated in battle by the powerful twin opponents of lethargic direction and poor scripting. The movie must have done better on home video than it did in theaters because it’s getting a direct-to-video sequel, The Man with the Iron Fists 2: The Sting of the Scorption, which Universal Studios Home Entertainment will release on Blu-ray and DVD on April 14, 2015. This time around RZA hands the directing duties to Roel Reiné, a DTV veteran who has previously made sequels to The Marine and Death Race for the video market, but remains in front of the camera in the title role of a kung fu fightin’ blacksmith with the invincible touch. Extra features will include:

Rated and Unrated Cuts of the Film
Feature Commentary with Director Roel Reiné and Executive Producer/Co-Writer/Star Rza (Both Versions)
Chi Warriors: The Making of The Man with the Iron Fists 2

Whiplash (2014)

Another Oscar-nominated critics’ favorite is coming very soon to home video. Miles Teller plays a troubled young jazz prodigy and J.K. Simmons the unforgiving teacher he clashes with and learns from in Damien Chazelle‘s powerful drama Whiplash, which Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release on Blu-ray and DVD on February 24, 2015 with the following bonus features:

Audio Commentary with Writer/Director Damien Chazelle and J.K. Simmons
An Evening at the Toronto International Film Festival with Miles Teller, J.K. Simmons and Damien Chazelle
Timekeepers – Famous drummers discuss their craft and passion for drumming (Blu-ray exclusive)
Whiplash Original Short Film with Optional Commentary (Blu-ray exclusive)
Deleted Scene with Optional Commentary (Blu-ray exclusive)

The Babadook

Details for the upcoming release of the highly-acclaimed horror feature The Babadook have been released. There will be three editions made available: a standard Blu-ray, a special edition Blu-ray, and a DVD.

The special edition will include some exclusive bonus features:
