Just weeks after his 2012 film Magic Mike hit theaters, Channing Tatumconfirmed that a sequel was in the works, with plans to make the follow-up bigger.
With a Magic Mike XXL trailer expected later today, the hunky G.I. JOE actor posted an image of the film’s first poster to this Twitter account yesterday. The poster shows off a shirtless Tatum and his six-pack ads, but centers on his crotch area, where he points to the words “COMING” – coming to theaters, that is.
Along with Tatum returning as the titular stripper, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Kevin Nash, Adam Rodriguez, and Gabriel Iglesias will all be reprising their roles, with franchise newcomers Jada Pinkett Smith, Andie MacDowell, Elizabeth Banks, Donald Glover, and Amber Heard signing on for the ride this time around. Matthew McConaughey, who, in the first film, played a former stripper who owned the Florida club where Mike works, will sit out this dance.
The Gregory Jacobs-directed Magic Mike XXL will be a road-trip comedy that will see the gang head to Myrtle Beach, SC, for a stripping convention. Filming for the sequel began last August at several areas of Myrtle Beach before moving on to Savannah, GA, with scenes filmed at the Savannah Gentleman’s Club; Tybee Island, GA, where one of the locations used was the Dunes Inn & Suites; and Jekyll Island, GA, with their Jekyll Island Convention Center becoming the Strippers Convention movie shoot.
Picking up the story three years after Mike bowed out of the stripper life at the top of his game, “Magic Mike XXL” finds the remaining Kings of Tampa likewise ready to throw in the towel. But they want to do it their way: burning down the house in one last blow-out performance in Myrtle Beach, and with legendary headliner Magic Mike sharing the spotlight with them. On the road to their final show, with whistle stops in Jacksonville and Savannah to renew old acquaintances and make new friends, Mike and the guys learn some new moves and shake off the past in surprising ways.
While we wait for the first footage from Magic Mike XXL to arrive, let’s take a look back at Steven Soderbergh’s Magic Mike in a scene that features the five lead male strippers dancing to “It’s Raining Men.” The clip gives a good introduction to the returning leads – Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Kevin Nash, and Adam Rodriguez.
We’ll have the trailer up here as soon as it’s released online. [UPDATE: the trailer was released online early – watch it here.]
