Hafthor Bjornsson in Game of Thrones

We already know that Hafthor Bjornsson, the Icelandic giant who plays The Mountain on HBO’s Game of Thrones, is a monster of a man. We also know he can be good with kids and lift a whole lot of weight.

Now, Bjornsson is breaking a 1,000-year-old Viking weightlifting record. Though “record” may be the wrong word, as it sounds more like he took on the challenge left by an old fable. While competing in the World’s Strongest Viking competition—which he won for the second time in a row—Hafthor basically carried a tree on his back that weighed in at 650 kg (over 1,400 pounds) and measured 10 m long (almost 33 feet) for five steps, besting the millennium-old legend’s three steps taken by Ormur Stórólfsson.

You can read more and see the latest feat of strength accomplished by The Mountain that Rides in the video here below, as well as an image that shows just how large the log was.

According to Ilkka Kinnunen, who covered the event for Iron Mind, the legends goes like this:

“The record has been described in Icelandic Saga book. The legend of the Icelander Orm Storulfsson says that he walked three steps with this MONSTER WOODEN LOG which weighed over 650kg and was 10 m long! It took 50 mere mortals to help him placing it on his back! After he took his third step, his back broke under the enormous pressure and he was never the same after that!”

Hafthor posted the following to his Instagram account after the achievement:

“Well today my friends I made history!! As well as winning the title of The World’s Strongest Viking for the second time in a row I carried this MONSTER LOG 5 steps! My back held up fine!! As I’m on my way to my ultimate goal to win The World’s Strongest Man! NOTHING CAN STOP ME!! NOTHING CAN BREAK ME!!”

Bjornsson joined HBO’s Game Of Thrones as Ser Gregor Clegane, aka The Mountain That Rides, aka The Mountain, for last year’s fourth season, becoming the third actor to play the loyal Lannister lackey (the character was introduced in Season 1). One of the standout scenes from Season 4 was the The Red Viper vs. The Mountain in a brutal trial by combat, in which The Mountain, older brother to Sandor Clegane aka “The Hound,” delivered some gory blows. The massive actor will be a part of Season 5 of Game Of Thrones, which premieres on April 12, 2015.
