‘Doctor Who’ LEGO Set Coming In 2015

Doctor Who and LEGO, together forever! When you think of the crossover appeal, it seems like a no-brainer. Children have probably been putting down LEGO blocks to turn on the television and watch Doctor Who for decades now. Yet there never was an official set that let kids assemble the Doctor, the companions, the TARDIS, and the monsters to play with in the LEGO make believe worlds.

Until now, that is. LEGO announced this week that Doctor Who will be subject of their next LEGO Ideas set. The idea for the set was submitted by Who fan Andrew Clark, an artist at a game design company by day and devoted LEGObuilder at night. Final design, pricing, and availability of the set is yet to be announced.

The product is going into production in 2015 and is expected to be available for sale before the end of the year.

The LEGO Ideas program is a way for fans to submit their own design ideas for LEGO sets. Once submitted, the design proposals are voted on by an online community of aficionados. Those proposals that are able to attract 10,000 votes from the community are then passed to a design review board. The board then investigates the feasibility of the design for manufacturing and fit with the LEGO brand. It then makes final overall decisions about what proposals are produced.

In this case, Clark submitted his idea for a Doctor Who set on February 26th, 2014. It quickly accumulated the 10,000 community votes to merit consideration by the review board about six weeks later, on April 7, 2014. It competed with a number of other Doctor Who-themed set ideas after LEGO announced on February 25, 2014 that it resolved licensing conflicts with the BBC and the toymaker Character Group as reported here on GoD.

You can visit Clarke’s site for more images of the concept design, as well as his LEGO Ideas page, where he talks about this design.

So, “Allons-y!” and “Geronimo” LEGO! We want our Doctor Who play sets!
