The iconic photo of President Richard Nixon shaking hands with Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Elvis Presley is often described as strange and bizarre. But if it wasn’t for that historic meeting, Liza Johnson’s new comedy, Elvis & Nixon, starring Michael Shannon and Kevin Spacey, as the respective icons, would not be happening.
Johnson’s new film documents the two real-life figures meeting for the first time at the White House’s Oval Office, but there is more to this event than a photo-op. The story behind this meeting is that Elvis really wanted a badge from the Federal Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs, and would go as far as offering his services to the President to be an agent to get one.
Now we have our first look from the film, hit the jump to check it out.
Elvis & Nixon also stars Evan Peters, Alex Pettyfer, Colin Hanks, Johnny Knoxville, Tracy Letts, and singer Sky Ferreira, and was written by Joey Sagal, Hanala Sagal, and actor Cary Elwes, best known for The Princess Bride. Cassian Elwes and Holly Wiersma are producing with Autumn Pictures’ David Hansen and Johnny Mac financing and executive producing alongside Byron Wetzel, Robert Ogden Barnum, and Jerry Schilling.
This isn’t the first time the meeting has been depicted on screen. Rick Peters, Bob Gunton, and Alyson Court starred in Elvis Meets Nixon, a 1997 embellished depiction of the meeting between the two.
Here’s the official plot synopsis.
Two men at the height of their powers, conscious they could not stay on top forever, both ripped with fear of the inevitable, sharing one famous private moment in the Oval office. ELVIS & NIXON recounts the morning of December 21st 1970, when the King of Rock’ n Roll (Michael Shannon) showed up on the White House lawn to request a meeting with the most powerful man in the world, President Richard Nixon (Kevin Spacey). He had a very urgent request: to be sworn in as an undercover Federal Agent at large. This intimate moment in the Oval office between two men at the height of their powers has never been told.
Elvis & Nixon, which is currently in production, has no release date at this time.
