Netflix Developing Live-Action ‘Legend Of Zelda’ Series
  |  @   |

The Legend of Zelda became an early hit on the Nintendo Entertainment System back in the mid 80’s. Since then, Nintendo has made about 20 games featuring the heroic Link as he battles to save Princess Zelda and the realm of Hyrule. Now, it seems a live-action series adaptation of the famed video game franchise could be coming to Netflix, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The series is reportedly in the early stages of development at Netflix, who’s working closely with Nintendo and looking for writers, with the aim of making it a family friendly Game of Thrones-like series. With plenty of swords, shields, princesses, and evil sorcerers, it’s not too big of a stretch to see why that world might work for that plan.

Traditionally, Nintendo hasn’t been really generous with the rights to Zelda or any other of its properties outside some cartoons in the 1980’s. After the movie version of Super Mario Bro. became a super bomb at the box office, the compnay has been even more anxious about anyone toying with their beloved Hyrule or any other of their franchises. So while this may be in development, we’re still a long way off from seeing Link swing the Master Sword.

As far as the gaming universe goes, a new Zelda video game is currently being development at Nintendo for their Wii U platform. The not-yet-titled game was teased back in June at E3, with the first gameplay footage for it shown at the Game Awards in December 2014. The new video game is schedule for release in mid-2015 to coincide with 2015’s E3.

Flashback time: With the Fifty Shades of Grey film adaptation coming out in theaters next weekend, now’s a great time to remember when upon its release in 2012, The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia, Dark Horse’s 248-page hardcover encyclopedia on the Legend of Zelda universe, knocked the wildly popular Fifty Shades paperback box set from its long-held No. 1 spot on Amazon’s Best Sellers list. Good times.
