HBO’s new series Togetherness has just become my new favorite TV show.

Star Mark Duplass recently appeared on Conan with his brother, Jay Duplass, who co-created and co-wrote the HBO drama with him. Host Conan O’Brien asked the brothers about a scene in the third episode, “Insanity” (which aired on January 25th), where Mark’s character Brett tries to motivate his long-time best friend Alex (Steve Zissis, fellow co-creator and writer) by using Rush’s “Tom Sawyer” as inspiration, resulting in the friends doing a whole synchronized air-drumming sequence. The brothers, who explained that that part of the episode was based their real-life experience from college, got the host to join them in recreating the air-drumming scene.

Upon seeing the Duplass brothers air-drum on Conan, Rush frontman Geddy Lee said (via FB), “Clearly the Duplass Bros. are seasoned air drummers”¦they nailed it!” That’s some high praise right there!

If you’ve ever been to a Rush concert, then you’ve seen the hordes of fans air-drumming not only to the Canadian trio’s most famous song, “Tom Sawyer,” but to most of their tunes. It’s basically a sea of arms up in the air drumming together. It’s amazing. This phenomenon occurs because Rush’s Neil Peart is one of the best drummers ever – EVER – and the band’s music has very prominent, complicated drum parts that are probably the most air-drummed songs ever recorded next to maybe AC/DC.

Just an FYI, if you ever wanted to see what I look like while listening to Rush, you just go ahead and watch the video below from Conan, because that’s basically me. I can’t NOT air-drum to “Tom Sawyer,” and a lot of other Rush songs. Also, I once again take offense to the notion that there’s no female Rush fans and that their music is basically a woman-repellent. The brothers joked with O’Brien that the 1% of women in the audience at a Rush concert are there just to save their marriage. I love Rush and they have been my favorite band since I was 8-years-old and there’s more than 1% of females in their audience! /FYI.

The Duplass brothers have talked about how the music chosen for the show is a big part of the each character’s story. (The first episode, which premiered on January 11, 2015, has the main characters listening to Skid Row’s “Youth Gone Wild” while getting drunk on Strawberry Hill wine as they TP a douchebag’s house.) In a separate statement released by HBO back in January, Jay Duplass gave the following response when asked what the music brings to Togetherness:

The current first season of Togetherness consists of eight 30-minute episodes and has already been greenlit for a second season. The next episode, Episode 4, “Houston, We Have a Problem,” airs on Sunday, February 8, 2015 at 9:30pm.
