SNL 40th Anniversary Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake

Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake opened the Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary Special tonight with a musical number referencing the show’s most popular skits, with a nod to their infamous “History of Rap” bits. The entire thing was meticulously made, and included almost everything.

Watch the video of the SNL 40 opening here below.

Spotlight on Jimmy Fallon’s back (and yes I can recognize Jimmy Fallon just from his back), and with a couple of moves to the beat, he is handed a top hat and cane. Just as he is about to sing, “It’s….time……for…”, he is interrupted by his best friend, Justin Timberlake. When these two get together, it’s magic.

This is a “historic night,” referencing Coneheads, Gumby, “Jane you ignorant slut!”, Buckwheat, Stefan, “We’re here to pump (clap) you up,” and Shwing! right into their rap. They grab everything-cheesburger, cheeseburger, “you look mahvalous,” and schweddy balls, to name a few.

Fallon, “Justin, what’s that?”
“It’s my d*** in a box…my d*** in a box babe…,” from Timberlake.

The next stanza ends with “Bring it on down to SNL!” Cue Debbie Downer (Rachel Dratch), “Sadly. Sadly history has told us that opening the show with a musical number has led to a sharp drop in ratings.” I love Debbie Downer, especially when she breaks character.

Fallon, “NBC doesn’t care about ratings.”
Timberlake, “They really don’t.”

There is so much! You have to watch this opening.

They do the Blues Brothers dance complete with outfits, and it is fantastic.

Timberlake says in his best Christopher Walken voice, “More cowbell” and he and Fallon break them out, and get down. Mary Catherine Gallagher (Molly Shannon) comes out and does her schtick. At the moment of smelling armpit fingers, the three of them do her “Superstar!”

How do they end it?

“Live from New York….it’s Saturday night!”

The opening video starts with first Saturday Night Live logo in marquee lights, then slides through all the SNL opening logos, with opening credits that contain more stars than the Grammys (which should have had an opening number penned by SNL writers).

Note to all awards shows — hire Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake as hosts.

Thank you, SNL. We look forward to another 40 years.

Justin Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon kick off the SNL 40th anniversary special with a musical medley featuring catchphrases from the show’s 40-year history.
