‘Fifty Shades’ Author E.L. James Wants More Control Over Film Sequels

50 Shades Of Grey

Of course a novel series like Fifty Shades of Grey with a huge fanbase would get a big-screen adaptation, and despite the production problems – casting, chemistry between leads Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson, the disagreements between director Sam Taylor-Johnson and series author E.L. James – the film was the top earner at the box office, and was one of the highest grossing R-rated movies in the month of February, even though it was widely panned by critics for those same chemistry issues and a very weak script.

It’s highly unlikely that Taylor-Johnson would want to endure another six months of harping from James over the script and vision, which is probably why she hasn’t stepped up to say she is on board for 50 Shades Darker. Now, with word that James wants to write the script for the Fifty Shades sequel, the director is already out the door. Hit the jump for more.

Variety reports that E.L. James wants to have more control over the vision of 50 Shades Darker, the second book in the Fifty Shades series. If this is true, Kelly Marcel, who wrote the screenplay for Fifty Shades of Grey, is probably out as well.

I’m completely unfamiliar with the series of books, but from what I’ve heard, the tone mirrors the title, it will get darker. So to speak. There is more stalking, her new boss making advances at her, and Christian buying the company she works at just to get closer to her.

No official decision as been made about the status of Taylor-Johnson and/or Marcel for the sequels though. But even though Fifty Shades Of Grey has grossed over $300 million, there’s no information or release date set for the first sequel, and much of that delay is attributed to the fact that Universal and James are still ironing out the details to the contracts for the next two films.

“The studio had always intended to sit down with the author after the film opened and discuss next steps, and that has not yet happened,” said a Universal spokesman, according to Variety.

This really wouldn’t be the first time that an author adapted their own novel into a screenplay. But if James does get approved to write the script to the sequels, then Universal will need to take into account that she has never written a script before. That will most likely mean that she will have more on control over the revisions, which would mean that Universal may need to push up the scheduling for the start date of the sequel. What does this means for Dornan and Johnson? Well they are apparently contractually obliged to appear for the sequels.

But it is going to be interesting to see how they will get the two leads to work together, since they are the shining example of what poor on-screen chemistry looks like. Of course when you are the number one film in the country, and are the number one film in online ticket sales for two weeks running, I’m sure that will all change.

No official date has been set for Fifty Shades Darker.
