Rumor: Spider-Man Reboot May Have A Non-White Webslinger
  |  @   |

Now that Sony is sharing Spider-Man with Marvel Studios — for almost nothing — all sorts of rumors are spreading. We know that the studio wants to reboot the franchise to focus on the titular character’s high school origins while juggling both the awkward relationships and his superhero life, and a short list of actors gave us an idea of who they were looking for. While that idea may not sit well with some, this latest rumor could be the step in the right direction.

Rumor has it that the new Spider-Man may not be white, and may not be Peter Parker.

So does that mean Miles Morales will be doing the webslinging? Hit the jump for more.

We should clarify once again, that this is a rumor, and a pretty big one at that. Neither Sony nor Marvel has come forward to confirm this.

But the rumor does come from a highly reputable source: Jeff Sneider from The Wrap. During the Meet The Movie Press Podcast, Snider dropped the huge bombshell with this:

Listen, this is not set in stone guys, but I’m telling you right now, Spider-Man’s not going to be white. Spider-Man’s not going to be white. I’m 95% sure. Spider-Man’s going to be most likely black. But there’s a chance he could also be Latino. 95% sure, not white.

Black or Latino, well that’s definitely Miles Morales, who is of Black Hispanic descent. However, Snider never name drops the Ultimates character to confirm that it will be him in the reboot.

Spider-Man will appear in an all new reboot come June 27, 2017, but he is rumored to make his first appearance in Captain America: Civil War, which opens May 5, 2016. So with Civil War expected to begin filming in April, we should be hearing more rumors of who could play Spidey.

Getting a non-white Spidey would be a step in the right direction. Course there will be those who will disagree with the decision should it actually happen. But a non-white Spider-Man, be it Miles Morales or not, would really be the clean slate that this reboot desperately needs. We all saw that no one wanted to sit through a retelling of the origins of the Webslinger that all but came too quickly after Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. So a new take on the character and his origins could just be the thing to revitalize the franchise.
