James Gunn Responds To Criticism Of “Tsunami Of Superhero Movies”
  |  @   |

The Independent Spirit Awards and the Academy Awards were held this weekend, and of the many film nominated, you probably would not find superhero films vying for some of the bigger awards like Best Picture. But they were easy prey for some of the acceptance speeches and opening numbers. Nightcrawler director Dan Gilroy made it a point to say that independent film has survived under the “tsunami of superhero movies,” and Jack Black was involved in the opening Oscars number that mocked the genre by singing: “Superman, Spider-man, Batman, Jediman, Sequelman, Prequelman “” formulaic scripts!”

Now James Gunn, the director behind Guardians of the Galaxy, has spoken out in defense of superhero films to say that he and others who make superhero films put as much effort and love into their film as the independent directors put into their indie films. Hit the jump for more.

Here’s Dan Gilroy’s full quote about superhero movies:

“Independent film, the foundation and everybody here today, I think are holdouts against a tsunami of superhero movies that have swept over this industry. We have survived and we have thrived and I think that’s true spirit.”

There is a little bit of irony to that considering Rene Russo, Gilroy’s wife, appeared in two Thor films. But there is some validity to his statements as well; and it doesn’t necessarily make him a hypocrite, but he wouldn’t be where he is today without having been credited for working on films like The Bourne Legacy or Real Steel.

That being said Marvel Studios and WB’s DC film slates do show that we are about to become inundated with a plethora of superhero-related films. Will we be tired of it? I couldn’t tell you to be honest, we’ll just have to let the box office speak for us.

But back to James Gunn. Yesterday, he took to Facebook to defend superhero films. He actually didn’t find Black’s joke or Gilroy’s comments offensive, but felt the need to stand up for superhero films itself:

So now that you’ve heard both sides of the argument, what is your stance on superhero films?
