Watch Joseph Kahn’s Darker Take On ‘Power Rangers’ Starring Katee Sackhoff
  |  @   |

News on the new Power Rangers reboot has been light as of late. Last we heard, Roberto Orci dropped out so that he could focus more on Star Trek 3, and eventually dropped out of that as well. While there is no director currently attached to the Lionsgate film, Joseph Kahn (Torque) sure did give us a reason to believe that he would be the right person to direct the reboot with a new 14-minute short released by Adi Shankar, but that didn’t last too long. Written by Dutch Southern (Bad Turn Worse) and starring James Van Der Beek (Dawson’s Creek) and Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica), the short is a darker and more grittier take on the Power Rangers than we are accustomed to seeing.

Hit the jump for the video and more on why Kahn won’t be directing the reboot.

Kahn’s new video is great, and sure enough the look and feel of it would put him in the running to direct. That didn’t last too long. In an interview with HitFix, he said that he wouldn’t be interested in doing a Power Rangers with a darker tone,

“The irony here is that I wouldn’t even want to make “Power Rangers: The Movie’ for real. Like if I had to make a “˜Power Rangers’ movie, this is it. It’s 14 minutes long and it’s violent and this is what I have in me. If they offered me the 200 million version, the PG-13 version, I literally wouldn’t do it. It’s just not interesting to me.”

So why did he make the video in the first place? While the idea of a PG-13 Power Rangers didn’t interest him, the thought of doing one with a darker and grittier tone sounded silly, and that is what appealed to him the most,

“I think the trick that I really wanted to do with this was to make that dark and gritty version that everybody keeps talking about, but really do it. Really see if I could totally accomplish it with essentially a really incredible incredibly silly property.”

Parody and a different take are great, and Kahn’s explanation as to why it wouldn’t work as a full-length feature makes sense.
