New Pee-wee Herman Movie ‘Pee-wee’s Big Holiday’ Coming To Netflix

After being teased back in October, a brand new Pee-wee Herman movie is officially coming to Netflix.

It’s been announced that the new feature-length movie, titled Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, is set to begin filming in three weeks, and will premiere exclusively on Netflix in the future. The movie will see the now 62-year-old Paul Reubens once again becoming the forever young Pee-wee, while Anchorman, Superbad, and Bridesmaids producer and The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up director Judd Apatow will produce.

The movie will be released exclusively in all of Netflix’s territories when it eventually premieres.

Not much is known about the movie’s plot at the time, only that it will involve Pee-wee Herman, who previously had cinematic adventures in 1985’s Pee-wee’s Big Adventure and 1988’s Big Top Pee-wee, meeting a mysterious stranger who inspires him to go on a holiday in what’s described as an “epic story of friendship and destiny.” Pee-wee is also known, of course, for his popular TV series Pee-wee’s Playhouse, which ran from 1986 to 1991.

Of the announcement, Pee-wee himself said:

“Judd and I dreamt up this movie four years ago. The world was much different back then”” Netflix was waiting by the mailbox for red envelopes to arrive. I’ve changed all that. The future is here. Get used to it. Bowtie is the new black.”

With Apatow adding:

“As a fan of Pee-wee Herman since he first appeared on The Dating Game, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the brilliant Paul Reubens on this film. It is a dream come true.”

Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos also released a statement, saying:

“We didn’t hesitate for a moment knowing that Pee-wee’s Big Holiday was such a passion project for Paul and Judd and we are delighted by the opportunity to introduce such a beloved character to a new generation. We are thrilled to bring our viewers around the world the wonder of Pee-wee Herman.”

Reubens wrote the screenplay for Pee-wee’s Big Holiday with Paul Rust (Comedy Bang! Bang!, Arrested Development), and John Lee (Broad City, Inside Amy Schumer) will make his feature film directorial debut.
