The GoD List: Comics For February 25, 2015
  |  @   |

Each and every week, I, “Old King Thor!” Henchman 21 and “Daughter of Thor!” Empress Eve read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible”¦ theoretically. Naturally, we look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of our pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of February 25, 2015. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

We got comics for you to check out. Boy howdy, do we have comics for you to check out. We’ve got criminals and clones and gods and food and so much more. We’ve got a whole new batch of comics for you to check out this week so get to your local store or go download some books if that’s more your jam. We don’t care how you get them, so long as it’s legal. It’s time for your weekly does of The GoD List!

Criminal Special Edition (Image Comics – $4.99) Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips are back (along with Elizabeth Breitweiser on colors) with an all-new story for Criminal, the first new Criminal story in over 3 years. This 48 page tale takes us back to 1976, with Teeg Lawless trying to survive a stretch in county lock-up with only an old comic to keep him occupied. Criminal is my favorite of the Brubaker/Phillips collaborations, and I’m excited to read a new story in this world. I’m also interested in the comic within a comic that they’ve created for this special issue. You can buy the standard version of it, or you can also buy a special oversized magazine version of it, which has the cover shown above. I love Criminal, and I hope that the team comes back to this world once they are done with their current series, The Fade Out, which is also great.

Thor Annual #1 (Marvel Comics – $4.99) I bring this up for a couple of creators that are working on Thor Annual #1. The first is the creative team of CM Punk and Chew‘s Rob Guillory (more on Chew below) telling a story about young Thor engaging in a drinking contest. Next is Noelle Stevenson (Lumberjanes) bringing her unique voice to a story about the modern Thor. Finally, you get a new story by regular Thor writer Jason Aaron that deals with Old King Thor and his daughters. Basically, you get three new stories with some new talent, some rising talent, and some established talent. Not a bad line up for 5 dollars.

Orphan Black #1 (IDW Publishing – $3.99) I’ve never actually watched the show before, but I know that Orphan Black has a pretty good sized following, and they’re probably going to want to check out the first issue of the new comics series. Fans of the show will get an all-new story featuring their favorite characters and continues the story. If you’ve heard of Orphan Black but haven’t really watched the show before, this should be a good introduction to the story of a young woman who discovers that not only is she a clone, there has been cloned many times over. Hopefully this series is good enough to satisfy fans and also attract some new fans.

Chew #46 (Image Comics – $2.99) Back after a short catch up hiatus and that makes me happy. Chew remains one of the best comics out there, and we’re getting into the last chuck of the series so enjoy it while it’s still around. Seriously, if you haven’t checked out Chew yet, you’re missing one of the smartest, funniest, and most enjoyable comics available. Writer Jon Layman has crafted a series full of twists (seriously, the end of the last issue could not have been more shocking) and artist Rob Guillory has one of the most distinctive styles in all of comics. The 9th volume of the trade paperbacks for Chew is also this week, if you’re one of those folks who read the series in trade. So, get caught up and get ready for the third act of Chew‘s story.

Bone Vol. 01 “Out From Boneville” Tribute Edition (Cartoon Books/Graphix/Scholastic – $14.99) Creator Jeff Smith began self-publishing his Bone comic book series back in 1991 through his own imprint, Cartoon Books, and the original version has black-and-white artwork. In 2005, Scholastic released the first full-color edition for the first volume, Out From Boneville, and since this year marks that publications 10-year anniversary, the publisher has put out a special “Tribute Edition.” While the story of Bone — which sees three small, bald, humanoid cousins driven from their hometown of Boneville — is promoted for children, it’s definitely a series that appeals to adults as well. The Bone cousins end up embarking on many adventures while figuring out how to get home again. This new Tribute Edition includes 48 bonus pages of minicomics and artwork inspired by Bone from contributors like Jeffrey Brown (Darth Vader and Son), Dav Pilkey (Captain Underpants), Craig Thompson (Blankets), and many more. Available now through Amazon and TFAW for under $12.

Some other picks this week are D4ve #1 (of 5) from IDW; as well as two other ongoing series I’ve been enjoying: Tomb Raider #13 from Dark Horse and from Turok Dinosaur Hunter #12 Dynamite.

Also, highly recommended this week from GoD’s PS Hayes are Joe Frankenstein #1 and GI Joe: Snake Eyes Agent of Cobra #2, both from IDW. (Look for reviews of these and more here at Geeks Of Doom in our Comic Reviews section.)
