Six years into GK Films announcing that they would be rebooting Tomb Raider, we are finally getting some developing news. Not only has Warner Bros. joined GK and MGM to produce the film, but Evan Daugherty, writer of such films as Snow White and the Huntsman and Divergent, will pen the script.
Deadline reports that in addition to co-producing, WB will also co-finance the film as well. Daugherty is also credited with writing the scripts for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the upcoming G.I. Joe 3.
Now the reception of this all depends on who directs, but most importantly it depends on who they pick to play Lara Croft. Angelina Jolie starred in the first two films in 2001 and 2003 — which made over $430 million worldwide during their respective box office runs — five years after the first Tomb Raider games launched in 1996. While the film franchise may have been dead for the better part of the decade, the games themselves have been kept alive, even going through a reboot themselves.
According to the report, the reboot will be an origins story of sorts with the plot of the film centering on one of the first adventures of Lara Croft, which is the same premise of the recent game reboot where a young Lara and her crew find themselves shipwrecked on a mysterious island in a place known as the “Dragon’s Triangle.” Whether the new movie will be actually based on this game or tell a different story is not yet clear.
In addition, “the reboot is on a fast track” and the three production studios are currently in talks with Square Enix, the video game company behind the title.
At one point Marti Noxon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) was attached to write the script as well, but Deadline makes no mention of her in this latest report.
So who would you like to see play Lara Croft in the new Tomb Raider reboot, and who would you like to see direct the film?

I’d like to see Hayley Atwell as Lara.
