‘Supergirl’ Series Casts “Super” Vets Dean Cain and Helen Slater
  |  @   |

Dean Cain and Helen Slater have signed up for CBS’s Supergirl series, according to Variety. What roles they will play is not part of the scoop, but stay tuned.

These two have a super-heroic history. Slater played the title character in Supergirl, the 1984 movie also starring Faye Dunaway and Peter O’Toole, which was not a box office success. Slater returned to the DC universe to play Lara-El, Superman’s (Tom Welling) biological mother for three episodes of the television series Smallville. Cain spent four seasons as Superman to Teri Hatcher’s Lois Lane, in the 1990s television series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. He also guested on Smallville for the “Cure” episode as Dr. Curtis Cox.

Cain and Slater join lead Melissa Benoist (Glee) as Supergirl; Chyler Leigh (Grey’s Anatomy) as her foster sister, Alexa Danvers; Calista Flockhart (Brothers & Sisters, Ally McBeal) as her boss Cat Grant; Mechad Brooks (Necessary Roughness, True Blood) as love interest Jimmy Olsen; Laura Benanti (Nashville, Nurse Jackie); and David Harewood (Homeland, Robin Hood) as Hank Henshaw aka Cyborg Superman.

Supergirl is the next television foray into the DC universe, after the successes of The CW’s Arrow and The Flash, and FOX’s Gotham. I don’t know how crossovers could be managed as they are on different networks, but IMDB shows that CBS co-owns Arrow and The Flash, which leaves the possibility open.

Supergirl (1984) Official Trailer:

Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman [Season One – Intro]:

The first season (1993–1994) was a moderate success, garnering the cast, especially Teri Hatcher and Dean Cain, critical praise for their performances.Lane Smith was a huge success, breathing life and humor into the Daily Planet editor-in-chief Perry White. John Shea also met with rave reviews over his portrayal of Lex Luthor. Michael Landes’ modern-day take on the Jimmy Olsen character gained a cult following, as did Tracy Scoggins’ comedic take on Cat Grant, a more recent addition to the Superman mythos at the time. Lex Luthor was killed off in the season finale, after a falling-out between Shea and the producers over the actor’s strenuous commute between New York and Los Angeles.
