One of the biggest smash films of 2014 was Guardians of the Galaxy. Marvel’s wild, fun, fantastical, star-filled, and epic production had plenty of memorable scenes, moments, and especially, in an unexpected vintage and retro sense, music. It was the Awesome Mix Vol 1 cassette seen in the film that nonetheless that played a big part in Guardian‘s narrative and remains one of the more memorable artifacts from a movie full of them.
And now, you can own your very own Awesome Mix Vol 1, right down to a replica of the cassette tape itself used in the film, as Disney has re-released the product after its initial sold-out run last year. The cassette, which contains the film’s official soundtrack — currently available on CD, MP3, and vinyl — and comes with a free digital download of the album.
The biggest mix tape of the year now available on cassette tape! Playing an integral role in the blockbuster film, the songs live on a mix tape in the main character’s Walkman, which was given to him by his late mother. The set’s music is heard throughout the film and the tape itself has a prominent role in the movie’s story.
For those of you who may not be familiar with the original compact cassette generation, it was similar to today where we commonly see walkers, runners, and travelers alike chug down the street listening to music via headphones on their cell phone or music pods and digital portable devices. Back then, these same kind of activities used to be spearheaded via a “Walkman,” which is in essence a portable cassette player. Big and bulky in comparison to today’s devices; running on usually double A or triple A batteries; and prone to eating cassettes and destroying them on occasions, the Walkman and the culture it spawned was enjoyed by millions and possibly billions around the globe during the 1980s.
And hopefully most of that generation’s parents saved their Walkmans or cassette players, because if not, thrift stores and ebay are going to be rather stampeded by a herd of buyers of the Awesome Mix Vol. 1 who have nothing to play it on. Also, it seems as though the “compact cassette” might be making a comeback, as Metallica just announced today plans to release their 1982 demo No Life ’til Leather on cassette this year’s Record Store Day in April. (The initial run on the Awesome Mix Vol 1 was made exclusive only independent retailers associated with Record Store Day.)
But don’t fret 21st century children, as mentioned above, a purchase of the Awesome Mix Vol 1 cassette from the Disney Music Emporium website also comes with a digital version, for those that like to keep their physicality of playing their music up to the minute.
