If you want a surprisingly accurate plot description of a movie that has captured some level of pop-culture zeitgeist, while adding hilarious and often film deprecating commentary, then Screen Junkies’ Honest Trailers are for you. Few films have amassed the geek fandom of The Hunger Games series, based on the best selling books by Suzanne Collins. The YA thriller series about a dystopian future where kids fight to the death has made mega stars of its young actors and created a number of imitators and ride-alongs. The Screen Junkies team already has Honest Trailers of the first two films in the series, and with Mockingjay: Part 1 hitting Blu-ray, DVD, and Instant Video on March 6th, it’s time for a third HT, of the third HG”¦ Part 1″¦
Watch the honest trailer for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 here below.
When Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the seventh and final book in JK Rowling’s Potter-opus, was split into two 2-plus-hour films in 2010 & 2011, it (perhaps intentionally) opened Pandora’s Box. Twilight split their final book into two films, and of course, Peter Jackson turned a relatively short Hobbit book into three 3-hour movies!!! We finally arrive at the latest of these, Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1“¦ even the titles get tiresome. That’s where the Honest Trailers folks have their fun here, ripping Mockingjay for following the Part 1 formula and simply slowing the story so that it takes twice the time, and double the audience’s money. Narrator Jon Bailey gleefully points out the numerous repetitious scenes, and pointless time wasting building to the film’s main plot, which can seemingly be summed up in one word”¦ PEETA! Seriously, it was a fine movie, but everything was so obviously just there to set up Part 2.
The best parts as usual are the cast rundowns, where everyone and everything is up for grabs, including Elizabeth Banks (on this movie to pay her mortgage), referencing to Jennifer Lawrence‘s hacked photos, and calling Liam Hemsworth‘s Gale, Team Jacob is a dead-on-point Twilight reference. Check out Screenjunkies.com for more Honest Trailers, with new ones every Tuesday. My current favorite is the Divergent one, which openly mocks how similar the plots were with”¦ well you guessed it”¦ The Hunger Games. Best part, there’s a new Divergent movie coming soon, which means a new Honest Trailer can’t be far behind.
