First Look: Melissa Benoist As Supergirl In Full Costume

DC is at it again, this time dropping the first photos of their upcoming Supergirl television series, with star Melissa Benoist in full Supergirl costume. Check out the photos here below.

The upcoming Warner Bros. TV series, to air on CBS, revolves around Kara Danvers (aka Kara Zor-El) who not only happens to be Superman’s 24-year-old cousin, but is also finally taking action as a hero for the first time. Apparently after leaving Krypton she has been hiding her powers, much as Clark/Kal did. I, personally, am curious as to how much of the original backstory will remain and how much will receive an update.

Tentatively slated to air during the 2015-2016 season, this series holds a few similarities with DC’s other current television shows, namely The Flash and Arrow on The CW. Muted, darker coloring on the costumes seems to be a recurring item. This is obviously due to the fact that costume designer Colleen Atwood designed the suits for all of the aforementioned heroes. Atwood, an eight-time Academy Award nominee and three-time winner, has created a plethora of designs for several movies, including Alice in Wonderland, Memoirs Of A Geisha, Snow White And The Huntsman, and Chicago. The suit has a modern, durable look to it. Besides the coloring, the most noticable thing is the trendier, longer boots rather than the more traditional footwear. The classic skirt and cape remain, though.

In addition to Benoist (of Glee fame), we will be seeing Calista Flockhart (from Ally McBeal); Mehcad Brooks (True Blood, Desperate Housewives) as Jimmy Olsen; Chyler Leigh will play Kara’s physician sister, Alex Danvers; David Harewood will bring nemesis Hank Henshaw (aka Cyborg Superman) to the small screen. Laura Benanti will portray Kara’s Kryptonian mother, Alura Zor-El, in an ongoing role while the original Supergirl from the 1984 movie of the same name and Dean Cain of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman will apparently guest star in mystery roles.

This project is another step forward from writer/producers Greg Berlanti (The Flash, Arrow), Ali Adler, and Andrew Kreisberg. Glen Winter will direct the pilot and Sarah Schrechter will also be an executive producer with Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television producing this series.

It’s definitely nice to see a strong female superhero(ine) lead in what has long been a boy’s club. Now, where’s my Wonder Woman reboot?
