James Gunn: Marvel Won’t Be At Comic-Con; No Captain Marvel In ‘Guardians of The Galaxy 2’

Marvel Studios is basically the flagship of Hall H at the San Diego Comic-Con. Practically all other panels pale in comparison to the energy felt as fans stand up and cheer, pump their fists, and express sheer joy whenever they see footage for an upcoming movie. But when Disney started to have their own convention, the D23 Expo, that all started to change. The Marvel presence didn’t have much of an impact at Comic-Con as it did in a much smaller more contained venue at the Anaheim Convention Center for D23. And soon there might be a time where Marvel doesn’t show up at all to SDCC.

Well, it may happen this year, at least according to Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn.

Gunn recently participated in an impromptu Q&A on Facebook where he was asked if “he” was appearing at Comic-Con this year. He responded with,

I’m not sure. Marvel isn’t going so I’m not sure I will either.

This shouldn’t come as a complete surprise considering that Disney also has the D23 Expo this year. The Disney-fan convention is held every other year. Marvel also revealed much of their film slate last year. By doing so, the Marvel Mystery Movie formula is now gone, but it’s not as if they need Comic-Con to announce their movies. They have already proven that fans will show up in droves in the middle of the week to see what the studio has planned for them.

But there are also some new cards on the table. The studio now has access to Spider-Man, and Mark Ruffalo may or may not get his own Hulk movie, and who knows what is next.

Let’s also not forget that New York has their own Comic-Con, so Marvel may or may not make an appearance there.

Moving onto Captain Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy 2 news, Gunn had been pestered about whether or not the character would appear in his sequel, and who he could see playing the titular role. The director did jokingly offer who’d he like to see play Captain Marvel, but followed it up with a serious answer as to why he doesn’t get into casting characters that aren’t in his movies:

Paula Poundstone. I don’t know. I don’t think about casting movie characters who aren’t in my movies. Here’s the thing – a character takes on a lot of new attributes in a script, so I don’t think anyone but the filmmakers know who would be the ideal actress or actor for any role. I remember everyone sending me casting ideas for Rocket and I was, like, you guys, he’s a somewhat different in my movie than he’s been in the comics. He has a very particular way of speaking, so you don’t really know who the best casting is.

Gunn has addressed that he won’t be involved in the Captain Marvel casting process, but that was during a time where Marvel didn’t confirm that there would be such a film.
