AMC’s The Walking Dead Companion Series Gets 2-Season Order
  |  @   |

It has no title, but it does have a 2-season order.

AMC announced today that the buzzed-about Walking Dead Companion Series, a spin-off of The Walking Dead codenamed Cobalt, that’s set to take place in Los Angeles when the zombie apocalypse struck (back when Rick was in a peaceful little coma), will air its 6-episode first season this Summer. The second season will air in 2016, setting up zombie fun all year round.

The next group slated to battle the walkers (rotters, biters, roamers – I wonder what their name will be for the zombies?) consists of Kim Dickens (Sons Of Anarchy, House Of Cards), Cliff Curtis (Gang Related), Alycia Debnam Carey (The 100), and Frank Dillane (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince).

I’m sure with the success of The Walking Dead, and with the companion series headed by five executive producers (Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Greg Nicotero, David Alpert, and Dave Erickson), with Kirkman and Erickson co-writing the pilot, this show, unofficially called Fear the Walking Dead, will be a breakout hit and renewed for more than two.

What is always most interesting to me about spinoffs, sequels, prequels, and the like, is the possibility of crossovers. The Walking Dead began two months after the outbreak, and although we are almost at the end of season five, less than two years have passed in Rick’s world. The prequel-ness of the prequel is not so far off that one group (or member thereof) could not cross paths with the other. I know, I know. They are on opposite sides of the country, but nothing boosts ratings like a good juicy crossover episode.

From the AMC blog:

“We take incredibly seriously the notion of building a satisfying companion series to the number one show on television. From the beginning of The Walking Dead on AMC, we’ve been asked questions about what was going on in other parts of the zombie apocalypse, and what it looked like as the world really did “˜turn.’ Through this new series, we’re going to find out,” said Charlie Collier, AMC president. “Robert Kirkman, Dave Erickson and their writing team, along with an incomparable set of producers, cast and crew have created something remarkable and clearly distinct. We respectfully follow the request of Monty Python as we bring out (the latest of) our Dead.”

“We feel empowered by this two-season commitment, a serious show of faith from our network partner AMC,” Kirkman said. “I personally take it as a sign that they believe, like we do, that we’ve accomplished our goal of developing something original that can pay tribute to the original show and expand the world I created while at the same time having something new to say with this story. I’m very grateful that we now have the opportunity to tell this amazing story and show the fans that we really haven’t scratched the surface yet when it comes to The Walking Dead.”
