Live-Action ‘Dumbo’ To Be Directed By Tim Burton For Disney
  |  @   |

Yet another of Walt Disney’s classic animated movies is set to be turned into a live-action feature, and Tim Burton has been brought in to make it.

It’s being reported that Burton, who made the live-action version of Disney’s Alice in Wonderland that starred Johnny Depp and Mia Wasikowska and went on to score over $1 billion worldwide at the box office, is set to return to the Mouse House for a live action adaptation of the 1941 animated hit Dumbo.

The movie will once again be a mixture of live action and CGI animation, and tell the story of a baby elephant traveling with the circus who often gets made fun of for his abnormally large ears.

The original movie is only 64 minutes in length—about the same as one episode of Game of Thrones—so of course the live action adaptation will have to add a bit to stretch it out to at least 85 to 90 minutes, if not longer than that. How this will be accomplished is not entirely known at the moment, but the report does say that this new Dumbo will add a “unique family story that parallels Dumbo’s journey.”

The screenplay is written by Ehren Kruger, whose previous credits include Arlington Road, Scream 3, The Ring, The Ring Two, The Brothers Grimm, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and Transformers: Age of Extinction. Tron: Legacy and Oblivion producer Justin Springer is producing along with Kruger

Burton has made a number of movies for Disney in the past, including Ed Wood for Touchstone Pictures, Wonderland, and Frankenweenie. He’s also worked on a collection of other movies for the company, including The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach as a producer, and Tron and The Fox and the Hound as an uncredited animator.

  1. Stop it. Just … stop it. Tim Burton’s creepy fingerprints do not need to be all over a special story like “Dumbo.”

    There. I said it.
