Sony Developing Second ‘Ghostbusters’; Channing Tatum Might Star, Russo Brothers Could Direct

Sony already has a reboot of the 1984 classic Ghostbusters in the works, featuring an all-female cast of ‘busters in Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon, but it turns out that project is not their only plan with the franchise moving forward.

After years of rumors of a Ghostbusters 3 being developed by the guys behind the original eventually became the all-female reboot mentioned above, it’s being reported that Sony has actually created a new production company called, quite fittingly, Ghostcorps, led by original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman and star Dan Aykroyd with the mission of finding branding opportunities based on the original.

First up for them is the development of a second Ghostbusters movie, which they’re putting an interesting team together for. This team includes Channing Tatum and his partners Reid Carolin and Peter Kiernan as producers, which could also lead to the 21 Jump Street actor starring as another new Ghostbusters team member. Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, who just signed a first-look deal with Sony and are hoping to both produce and direct this new Ghostbusters.

A third member of the team working on this second project is Drew Pearce, who will write the screenplay. Pearce’s previous writing credits include Iron Man 3 and Mission: Impossible 5.

The whole gameplan here was explained by Reitman, who said:

“We want to expand the Ghostbusters universe in ways that will include different films, TV shows, merchandise, all things that are part of modern filmed entertainment. This is a branded entertainment, a scary supernatural premise mixed with comedy. Paul Feig’s film will be the first version of that, shooting in June to come out in July 2016. He’s got four of the funniest women in the world, and there will be other surprises to come. The second film has a wonderful idea that builds on that. Drew will start writing and the hope is to be ready for the Russo Brothers’ next window next summer to shoot, with the movie coming out the following year. It’s just the beginning of what I hope will be a lot of wonderful movies.”

“My primary focus will be to build the Ghostbusters into the universe it always promised it might become. The original film is beloved, as is the cast, and we hope to create films we will continue to love.”

In addition to the Captain America movies, the Russo brothers have also been mentioned as potential directors for future Avengers movies after Joss Whedon is done, so that’s something to keep in mind here too.
