Frozen Fever

Frozen Fever
Directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee
Music by Christophe Beck
Starring Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff, and Josh Gad
Walt Disney Animation Studios
Release Date: Friday, March 13, 2015

Who’s got Frozen Fever? This girl! Not because I’m the mother of a 4-year-old girl and it’s a prerequisite. Not because I saw Olaf voice actor Josh Gad in the opening cast of The Book of Mormon as Elder Cunningham, and thought him brilliant. And not because secretly inside I believe myself to be a magical queen with formidable powers.

Ok. Maybe because of that.

Thrilled audience members of Disney’s Cinderella in theaters this weekend were treated to the 7-minute short, Frozen Fever — a follow-up to 2013’s Frozen — before the main feature began. All of the pieces everyone loves (or is sick of) from Frozen were in there. Elsa (Idina Menzel) and Kristoff (Jonathan Groff), with Olaf’s (Gad) help (help as in tasting the cake) are setting up a grand room for Anna’s (Kristen Bell) birthday. She leaves them in charge while she leads the birthday girl on a little scavenger hunt, following a piece of string through the castle and the village. Sings Elsa, “You’ve never had a real birthday before….except of course the ones you spent outside my locked door.”

Anna: “Elsa, I think you might have a cold.”
Elsa: “I don’t get colds. Besides…a cold never bothered me anyway.” Cue children cheering and adults groaning (but secretly cheering).

But Elsa does have a little cold. With every sneeze pops a couple of magical mini snowmen, “Brothers!,” squeaks Olaf. Magical mischief-making mini-snowmen that try to happily destroy the birthday room, as Olaf and Kristoff try to stop them.

The song goes back and forth between Elsa surprising Anna with birthday gifts and gestures, while Anna tries to get Elsa to go to bed and rest because she’s sick.

The short is adorable and funny with a catchy song – “Making Today a Perfect Day.” We will all soon be singing that one, and watching viral videos of cute father-daughter teams singing along in cars. It is the perfect teaser to get us ready for the Frozen 2 continuation of the phenomenon.

Cinderella, was great too. Check out that review here: Cinderella Movie Review.
