The Following Joe Carroll Ryan Hardy FOX

The Following
Season 3 Episode 3: “Exposed”
Created by Kevin Williamson
Directed by Gary Love
Written by Michael McGrale

FOX
Air Date: Monday, March 16th, 2015, 9:00pm

When we last left Ryan Hardy and his world of insanity, Mark Gray (Sam Underwood) and his torturous henchmen forced Agent Jeffrey Clarke (Felix Solis) to broadcast their message to the world of Hardy and friends’ guilt in Lily Gray’s “murder.” Clarke was then brutally killed and left in a gift box for Hardy, Max (Jessica Stroup) and Mike (Shawn Ashmore) to find. Hardy (Kevin Bacon) awakes to bloody nightmares and must face the realizations that the media will be coming for him and his job is on the line. He uses the opportunity to set the media after Mark, a challenge which tests Mark’s last nerve.

Mark is losing his grip… and his followers. Daisy and Kyle (Ruth Kearney and Hunter Parrish) begin getting more fearful that Mark’s insanity will be the end of them. There’s also some unknown sinister agenda going on. Mark is clearly a pawn in a much bigger game, albeit a gleefully psychotic one who enjoys conducting interviews with corpses. Neil (Glenn Fleshler), the “disjointed” box man is having a hard enough time keeping tabs on his sick father, and now Hardy has an in to track him.

We learned last week that one Mark’s followers Andrew (Michael Irby) was connected to Joe Carroll’s old teacher (Gregg Henry). While Carroll remains unseen on death row, there is obviously much more than meets the eye and the ending teases big reveals and plot points next Monday.

The Following has continually pulled at our nerves and fears, and challenged the audience to not look away. This season is much more methodical and psychological. While Neil and Mark provide some gruesome fun, the focus is on Hardy, Max, and Mike who are being tormented by their pasts and teased with the possible future of losing everything. The acting has been fantastic. Whereas the show has had a pension for going over the top like Pacino in Devil’s Advocate, this season the stars are more reserved and realistic. Jessica Stroup‘s Max looks constantly tortured. She is the star Season 3 so far.

The Following returns with a 2-hour special event and is on Monday nights at 9:00 EST on Fox.
