The long gestating Fraggle Rock movie has added the kind of star power it needs to finally get into production. Joseph Gordon-Levitt joins the film, based on the The Jim Henson Company’s franchise of the same name, as producer as star, this according to a new report from Variety.
Debuting in 1983, Henson described Fraggle Rock as “a high-energy, raucous musical romp” that is “silly” and “wonderful.” The series centered on “cave-dwelling creatures called Fraggles who have to deal with the industrious Doozers and furry giants called Gorgs,” all of whom lived in the underground world known as Fraggle Rock.
More on this, as well as a quote from Gordon-Levitt after the jump.
As mentioned above, a Fraggle Rock film has been under development for quite some time, often times switching writers, producers, and studios before finally settling with New Regency in 2011.
Here is what Gordon-Levitt had to say about producing and starring in the film,
“The first screen personas I ever loved were Henson creations, first on “˜Sesame Street,’ and then on “˜Fraggle Rock. Jim Henson’s characters make you laugh and sing, but they’re also layered, surprising, and wise. From Oscar the Grouch, to Yoda, to the Fraggles. I’ve never stopped loving his work, even as a young frisky man, and on into adulthood. Collaborating with Lisa Henson makes me confident we can do something that Jim would have loved. I’m grateful and excited to be working with New Regency on this project.”
Other projects Gordon-Levitt will appear in includes playing that title role as Edward Snowden in Oliver Stone’s upcoming thriller Snowden, which Open Road Films will release in the U.S. on Christmas. He also stars in Robert Zemeckis’s The Walk, and adaptation of the documentary Man on Wire, as Philippe Petit, and in an untitled Seth Rogen Christmas comedy with Rogen, Anthony Mackie, Lizzy Caplan, and Jillian Bell.
