Anthony and Joe Russo Will Direct ‘The Avengers: Infinity War’ For Marvel Studios

One thing Marvel Studios adores almost as much as reaping those massive box office returns and being the dominant blockbuster factory on the planet is handing some genuinely talented directors with zilch for proven track records the reins to their mega-budget tentpole properties. They also love consistency, so with Joss Whedon vacating the director’s chair on the studio’s epic, two-part Phase Three crossover event The Avengers: Infinity War, it looks as if the job has been officially secured by Anthony and Joe Russo.

The Russos got their big start in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by directing last year’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which grossed over $714 million worldwide and currently holds an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. They also have Captain America: Civil War, which will has Chris Evans‘ heroic Avengers leader butting heads with Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and the possible additions of both Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and a yet-to-be-cast Spider-Man, kicking off the 2016 summer movie season. Marvel clearly loves these guys and the work they’ve been doing – after Winter Soldier they certainly have a fan in yours truly – so it’s understandable that they would to keep the Russos around and gainfully employed as long as possible.

The upcoming The Avengers: Age of Ultron is reportedly beginning new plot threads that will be strengthened and expanded upon in Civil War and brought to a blazing conclusion in the two-part Infinity War. The current Avengers line-up is said to be undergoing major changes after Age of Ultron and the events of Civil War and will be a focus of some of the Phase Three films. Keeping the Russos in command of the MCU’s many wars to come works nicely for all involved; these guys have proven their worth when it comes to juggling the action, humor, heart, and visual effects set-pieces, so it only makes sense to give them the opportunity to direct the epic event that Marvel has been slowly building towards even since the opening frames of the first Iron Man way back in 2008.

The studio is also said to be in talks with screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (the gents responsible for writing all three Captain America movies, among other Marvel-related projects) to pen the scripts for both parts of Infinity War. We can expect an official announcement once the ink finally dries on the Russos’ deal. I’m certainly excited.

Captain America: Civil War opens on May 6, 2016. The Avengers: Infinity War Parts I & II will open on May 4, 2018 and May 3, 2019, respectively.
