In the not-too-distant future…

In the 32nd collection of episodes from the cult comedy series Mystery Science Theater 3000, Joel Hodgson, Michael J. Nelson, Tom Servo, and Crow T. Robot endure unspeakable cinematic horrors. This volume includes a space drama, a sword and sandals epic, a ’50s spy film, and a failed TV pilot about an airport.

Yes, like Agent for H.A.R.M. and Code Name: Diamondhead, San Francisco International was developed as a pilot to a TV series that – shockingly – didn’t get picked up. In addition to SFI, there’s Space Travelers, Hercules, and Radar Secret Service.

MST3K: Volume XXXII features four episodes from the Comedy Central era, two with Joel Hodgson as host and two with Mike Nelson. It’s a solid, eclectic mix of episodes spanning seasons four, five, and six. Continue reading for detailed synopses of each episode!

Space Travelers

Original Air Date: June 6, 1992

Synopsis: “Four decades before the movie Gravity, another Oscar-winning drama about astronauts trapped in space graced the silver screen. It didn’t have any Clooneys, but it did have, as the British might say, a lot of bullocks. The 1969 thriller Marooned ran out of oxygen after being reedited into Space Travelers, and even as illustrious a cast as Gene Hackman, Richard Crenna, Gregory Peck and Lee Grant couldn’t save this from the comedy wood chipper on the Satellite of Love.”

Hercules

Original Air Date: July 17, 1993

Synopsis: “An outbreak of 19 Hercules movies were made in Italy in the late ’50s and early ’60s, but this one is patient zero. Steve Reeves stars as the legendary strongman, who helps Jason retrieve the Golden Fleece and reclaim his rightful throne from his scheming uncle. Hercules proves himself every bit the hero, although if watching this movie had been one of his 12 labors, he might have called it a day.”

Radar Secret Service

Original Air Date: December 18, 1993

Synopsis: “From MST’ie favorites Sam Newfield and Robert Lippert comes this uniquely unremarkable atomic age spy drama starring John Norman, who would later star in the far more suspenseful Days of Our Lives.”

San Francisco International

Original Air Date: November 19, 1994

Synopsis: “By today’s standards, six episodes of a TV series is considered a full season, but in 1970 it was considered an abject failure. Not that this TV movie/back-door pilot episode for Universal’s San Francisco International didn’t try to get off the ground. Pernell Roberts leads a respectable cast in this “day in the life story” of an airport and its maverick chief of security.”

MST3K: Volume XXXII is another fantastic collector’s edition release from Shout! Factory and a must-own for MST3K fans. All four episodes offer some grade-A riffing, with San Francisco International standing out as one of this collection’s best episodes. MST3K: Volume XXXII is now available on Amazon.
