Vivica A. Fox Joins ‘Independence Day 2’
  |  @   |

Another actor from the first Independence Day film is making a return for the sequel, Independence Day 2. Vivica A Fox is set to reprise her role as Jasmine Dubrow from the 1996 original film. She joins Jeff Goldblum as the only two actors – so far – to come back to reprise their respective role. Will Smith will not return, and Bill Pullman says he will be back but there has been no confirmation as of yet. Hopefully they’ve at least talked to Mae Whitman about reprising her role as the president’s daughter Patricia Whitmore.

More on the casting after the jump.

Fox and director Roland Emmerich confirmed the news on Twitter.

For those who haven’t seen the first Independence Day (drop what you are doing and see it), Fox played Jasmine, a stripper and the love interest of Smith’s character Steve Hiller. Now it will be interesting to see how her character will work without her husband.

Earlier reports had Emmerich writing the film as a trilogy, but this may be a case of wait and see, as the film is currently being developed as a standalone sequel. Emmerich and original writer and producer Dean Devlin wrote the draft, with rewrites penned by James Vanderbilt (The Amazing Spider-Man) and Carter Blanchard.

Fox and Goldblum will be joined by newcomers Liam Hemsworth, who will play the son-in-law of Bill Pullman”˜s President Thomas J. Whitmore, and Jessie Usher as Dylan Dubrow, the son of Smith and Fox’s characters and the role played by Ross Bagley in the 1996 original.

Though plot details are being kept under wraps, we’ve heard that the film could take place some 20 odd years after the events of the first film, after the aliens have traveled for two decades from their home planet to Earth to get revenge for their fallen brethren.

Independence Day 2 is scheduled to open in theaters on June 24, 2016.
