Joseph Gilgun in Misfits

Another actor has been locked in for the upcoming AMC TV series adaptation of the Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon comic book series Preacher, which is written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, with Sam Catlin acting as showrunner.

It’s being reported that Joseph Gilgun has been cast in the role of Cassidy, an Irish vampire who’s joining the main character Jesse Custer and his ex-girlfriend Tulip O’Hare as they seek to find God…actually find God, not just spiritually.

If you’re unfamiliar with Gilgun’s work, you can check out a scene with him below.

Here’s a full description of the comic:

Preacher follows Reverend Jesse Custer, a tough Texas preacher who has lost his faith, has learned that God has left Heaven and abandoned His responsibilities. He finds himself the only person capable of tracking God down, demanding answers, and making Him answer for His dereliction of duty. Accompanying Jesse on his journey is his former girlfriend and a friendly vampire who seems to prefer a pint in the pub to the blood of the innocent. On his tail is one of the most iconic bad guys in print – an immortal, unstoppable killing machine named the Saint of Killers – a western lone gunman archetype whose sole purpose is to hunt and kill Jesse.

Cassidy is a character that’s described as:

The most wild-ass, bestest “bro” you’d ever want to meet. He may be 100 years dead but no one’s more boisterously alive than Proinsias Cassidy. An incorrigible mischief-maker, Cassidy’s up for anything “” joyriding, bungee-jumping, bank robbing, peyote dropping. He’s also a relentless conversationalist with opinions on everything from religion to politics to pop culture to theories on why people are better able to tolerate the odor of their own flatulence.

Gilgun is a British actor known for his roles in This is England, Harry Brown, Lockout (Space Jail!), and Misfits.

He joins Ruth Negga, who was recently cast as Tulip, and the even more recently cast Ian Colletti, who will play the character lovingly known as Arseface. Colletti’s credits include Phoebe in Wonderland, Baby Momma, and Rake.

Who will play the lead Custer character in Preacher is not yet known, but Dominic Cooper is said to be the frontrunner for the job. Cooper is known for playing Howard Stark, the father of Iron Man Tony Stark, in Captain America: The First Avenger, as well as the Marvel one-shot Agent Carter and the TV series of the same name that was born from it. He’s also starred in An Education, The Devil’s Double, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Need For Speed, and Dracula Untold. He will be seen in the World of Warcraft movie, Warcraft, as King Llane Wrynn next year.
