iZombie Liv

iZombie
Episode 1.2 “Brother, Can You Spare a Brain?”
Director: John Kretchmer
Screenwriter: Diane Ruggiero-Wright
Cast: Rose McIver, Malcolm Goodwin, Rahul Kohli, Robert Buckley, David Anders
The CW
Air Date: March 24, 2015, 9pm

Last week on iZombie: Episode 1.1, we met Olivia Moore (Rose McIver), ex-medical student, ex-fianced, ex-living zombie who caught this disease when a guy named Blaine goes into full-on zombie mode and scratches her. Scrapping all her life’s plans, she takes a job in a morgue for a steady food supply and starts helping the cops, since the brains let her capture snippets of the victims’ memories.

iZombie 1.2 “Brother, Can You Spare a Brain?” review: So funny! I’m serious. This show and episode is adorable and David Anders popping up for a chunkier part of the episode is even more delightful. And have you ever seen a cuter zombie? I haven’t. He’s set to be the Big Bad of this show, but since he does have some stirrings of desire to be good (we think), there’s definitely redemption and romantic possibilities afoot.

“I’m just a big psychic zombie trying to do her part.”

Oh my god. There’s a part where Liv is describing Blaine to a sketch artist where she just starts to realize she ingested the power of an artist. Phrases like “historic chin” and “they kind of grew from his mouth like a secret he was trying to keep” had me dying (no pun intended). That there was a case to solve, was secondary to the conversations between these witty characters. The case is only needed to give Liv new powers off the victim(s), in this case, a gigolo artist, and to have her interact with her team of Clive (Malcolm Goodwin, who thinks she’s a psychic, and Dr. Ravi (Rahul Kohli), who knows she’s a zombie, which thrills the scientist within.

Now, I’ve never seen showrunner Rob Thomas’ Veronica Mars series (don’t kill me – it’s on the future binge list), but I can quote Buffy (and do on occasion), and it does have that same ease of banter that was prevalent of that cult icon. I’m gonna knock on wood and say that I think iZombie will be sticking around.

Guest Star Alert! Jeffrey Vincent Parise (General Hospital) and Judy Reyes (Scrubs) guest as an the dead artist’s art dealer and the dead artist’s wife.

I also dig that the show comes back from commercial with a comic still morphing to the scene.
