Of all the roles Hugh Jackman has appeared in, he is undoubtedly best known for playing Wolverine throughout the X-Men film franchise. But as we all know, all good things must come to an end, and the actor may have confirmed that he will no longer appear as the mutant Wolverine after the untitled The Wolverine 2, directed by James Mangold.
Hit the jump for more.
Jackman hinted that his third Wolverine solo film may be his last film on his latest Instagram post with the caption “WOLVERINE …ONE LAST TIME. HJ.” The image contains a photo of him equipped with Wolverine’s adamantium claws. You can see the photo below.
The actor has brought to life Logan/Wolverine to the big screen seven times in the franchise, appearing in the original X-Men trilogy; cameoing in X-Men: First Class, and starring in two solo Wolverine films (X-Men Origins: Wolverine and The Wolverine). He then reprised his role for the time-traveling X-Men: Days of Future Past. But the Instagram photo seems to indicate that the untitled The Wolverine 2 film will be his last outing. He isn’t confirmed for X-Men: Apocalypse, which is scheduled for a May 27, 2016 release, and will star First Class castmembers Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicholas Hoult, as well as newcomers Oscar Isaac, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, and Alexandra Shipp.
Recasting the role was inevitable, but Jackman is the definitive Wolverine, and Fox will have to be absolutely sure that the actor they are replacing him with can meet the same standards.
However, in light of Sony sharing Spider-Man with Marvel, there could be a chance that the character appears in Avengers: Infinity War. Jackson has expressed interest in reprising the role so that he can join his fellow Avengers, and if Fox is willing to work out some sort of deal, it could very well happen – although we haven’t heard anything that would lead us to believe it will happen.
So what do you think? Is it time for Jackman to retract his claws as Wolverine one last time? Or should Marvel and Fox work out a deal so that he can appear in Avengers: Infinity War?
