Steven Spielberg’s ‘The BFG’ Casts Bill Hader

Bill Hader

Steven Spielberg and Roald Dahl. Combined these men have created some of the greatest children’s stories ever. From E.T. and Indiana Jones to Matilda and Willy Wonka, these men of film and literature have changed lives for generations of kids. So imagine how mind blowing it was when it was announced that Spielberg was helming one of Dahl’s classics, 1982’s The BFG. Melissa Mathison is penning the screenplay. For those uninformed, BFG stands for “Big Friendly Giant.”

Along with Tony award-winner Mark Rylance (playing the BFG) and newcomer Ruby Barnhill (playing little English girl Sophie) is SNL veteran Bill Hader.

Hader will star as one of the giants, and since the BFG is the only friendly one around, chances are that the comedian will lend his talents to one of the big meanies like Fleshlumpeater, Bonecruncher, or Guzzardgulper!

Hader is probably best known for his SNL character Stefon, a flamboyant night club enthusiast with a crush on Seth Meyers, and will be starring alongside Amy Schumer in the Judd Apatow comedy Trainwreck in July. He has 7 more films coming out over the next two years. An accomplished voice actor, Hader is also lending his talents to several animated projects including Disney Pixar’s Inside Out as Fear and a role in the 2016 Angry Bird animated film.

Spielberg’s The BFG will hit theaters in the Summer of 2016.

Spielberg’s next film he had a hand in is June’s Jurassic World, the fourth installment in the Jurassic Park franchise, for which he is executive producer. After that will be Bridge of Spies, a Cold War spy-thriller starring Tom Hanks and co-written by the Coen Brothers! Does anyone else smell Oscars?

It was also recently announced that the director, who gave us greats like JAWS, Schindler’s List, and Minority Report, will be bringing a big-screen adaptation to theaters of Ernest Cline’s 2011 sci-fi adventure novel Ready Player One for Warner Bros. from a screenplay by Zak Penn (The Incredible Hulk).
