Tom Hardy In Mad Max: Fury Road

This year’s WonderCon was a relatively quiet one considering it fell on Easter Weekend. Still, studios were generous enough to stop by and present some scenes for their upcoming Summer tentpoles. At the Warner Bros. panel, attendees were treated to some footage from Mad Max: Fury Road. Unfortunately director George Miller, and stars Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, and Nicholas Hoult were unable to attend the event to talk about what is expected to be one of the biggest films of the Summer. However, the footage made up for their absence.

The studio also presented Brad Peyton‘s disaster thriller San Andreas, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Carla Gugino, and Alexandra Daddario. Hit the jump to to read about their presentation.

Working on San Andreas presented its challenges. Peyton said they tried to keep the film within the realm of reality while maintaining a cinematic feel. They had conducted research over at UCLA and CalTech, even going as far as giving them questions to give the film more depth. What they learned was that there were new technologies being developed to measure these quakes, which forced the writers to change the script to accurately depict how quakes are measured.

Peyton wanted to make the film as real as possible, no artifice. To give this honest portrayal, actors had to experience what is being seen. So if Gugino is falling in the film, that’s not CGI, she is actually falling. No CGI. Same goes for Daddario, who was working underwater with Johnson. Daddario said that this was the best way to portray the character organically, and that she had a fun time doing it, although she doesn’t know if this makes her a sadomasochist.

From the footage shown, we see that this is about a family, something that Gugino alluded to during the presentation. She also added that there was not going to be any “dinosaurs, aliens, or monsters.”

San Andreas opens in theaters on May 29, 2015.

Opening two weeks earlier is Mad Max: Fury Road. As previously mentioned, there was no talent on site to talk about the film. However, the footage shown during the presentation was also shown at SXSW earlier this year. In it we see Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) waking up after surviving a crash that was caught up in a major sandstorm. We learn that he is a prisoner as he is chained and muzzled with straps of metal. When he discovers that he is cuffed to an unconscious Nux (Nicholas Hoult), he tries to break free by shooting the chain off with a sawed-off shotgun. The gun fails to go off, and he puts the unconscious weight over his shoulder to find something that will free him.

The next scene takes us to Max finding a large tanker, and Furiosa (Charlize Theron) who had just freed The Wives from Immortan Joe. Unsure if they are friend or foe, Max demands to have some water while aimming the gun at the Wives. One pregnant woman hands over a hose. He then demands that another free him using one of their boltcutters. As she tries desperately to break him free, Furiosa charges at Max, and a fight ensues. Though she is missing a hand, she is adept at hand-to-hand combat, and soon takes his gun, but is shocked to learn that it doesn’t work. Max then takes advantage of this to pin her down. Soon Nux wakes up and tries to help Max, but the Wives tug at the chain.

Furiosa, needing some heat, strikes at a hidden compartment of the tanker, which contains a gun. She fires at Max but misses, and Max grabs the gun, only to take out the clip. Nux manages to trip Furiosa, and Max follows that up by taking her gun and pinning her down to the ground. He then grabs the clip, takes aim at Furiosa, but misses all of his shots on purpose.

Mad Max: Fury Road opens in theaters on May 15, 2015.
