Russo Brothers Confirmed For ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

Less than a month away from the release of Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Age of Ultron comes the announcement that Joe and Anthony Russo will be directing the Avengers: Infinity War two-part film. It was actually reported last month that the sibling directors were in the running to helm the film, but now Disney and Marvel have confirmed the news in a new press released that was posted on the Marvel website.

The Russos first made their Marvel Studio debut with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, a film that grossed $714 million worldwide. Eventually they would sign on to direct the film’s sequel, Captain America: Civil War, which will bring Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark character into Captain America’s story in a much larger capacity than a simple cameo. The film will also introduce Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it is rumored that Spider-Man, who Marvel gained permission to use after a deal with Sony was agreed upon back in February, will make his big screen MCU debut in the film.

News of The Russos directing both parts of Avengers: Infinity War wasn’t completely unexpected. After The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron director Joss Whedon announced that he would no longer be directing any more Marvel films after Age of Ultron, the brothers were named as possible replacements, alongside James Gunn, who had directed Guardians of the Galaxy previously, and will be directing its sequel Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

The press release mentions some of the plot points we already know about Captain America: Civil War, but doesn’t say anything about Spider-Man making an appearance.

Other Russo works include being executive producers on cult-favorites like Community and Happy Endings. The two also earned a Primetime Emmy award for their work directing the pilot episode of the cult-hit Arrested Development series.
